bellamonte park invaded!

[Wyrmbreaker] Wyrmbreaker in Bronzeville: plainly dressed for once in a grey and black ski jacket, jeans. The hood is up, not for the look but for the warmth; the fact that this reduces his peripheral vision does not bother him.

Katherine Bellamonte bought, cleansed and renovated a patch of land here. A gift to Gaia and the Sept. That's where he's headed -- to make sure local punks hadn't tampered with it. Much, anyway.

[Wyrmbreaker]
Dice Rolled:[ 7 d10 ] 4, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 10 (Success x 4 at target 7)

[Ymene] The park went up so quickly that the neighborhood is yet uncertain what to do with it (money like that [power like that] why didn't they [what about] fucking outsiders [why wouldn't they]). The park has yet to see green. The ground has yet to know seed (spring). Perhaps the fountain has yet to murmur water songs to people [birds (animals)]. There is something wrong with the park, once he gets there. Doesn't take hours of looking around, hours of stalking in the shadows, trying to sniff it out. What's wrong?

Listen. There's a metallic whine (faint, incessant). Back and forth. Back and forth. Back and back and back and forth. The sound is like a saw, but not a seesaw. Doesn't sound like someone breaking anything, or someone chiseling at anything. What it sounds like is what it is.

There is a swingset. [Didn't Gossamer Wing like the swingset? Wasn't she joyful over it?] There is more than one swing in this swingset. But there is only one swing, swinging. [No wind.] Nobody there. It's quite possible that somebody just jumped off, that the swing is still moving, because somebody was there not long ago. But it keeps ... keeps

keeps ... keeps ...
keeps ...

on. At the same steady rate. Does not diminish. More ghosts, Lukas?

[Wyrmbreaker] More ghosts? is, in fact, the first thing on his mind. Following that is: goddammit just go to SLEEP, as though ghosts were errant children, misbehaved brats who refused their deserved bedtimes.

Nevertheless, it cannot be said that Wyrmbreaker is not brave, even in the face of phantom menaces and the like. Softly, he lifts the latch on the gate; lets himself in. Snow covers the ground, crunching soft beneath his footsteps as he heads for the solitary swinging swing.

[Ymene] The swinging doesn't stop. He is not attacked from either side by portents or omens. He might, for a brief moment, feel as if the air weren't right. Too full of holes. Dense air, swiss-cheese air. Natural phenomenon. There is fog, lying heavy in the park. There is no ghostly laughter, no lovely women, no blood seeping out from the cracks of the sidewalk [yet?] and no flickering lights either. Just the swing, back-forth, back-forth, back-back-back-back ... forth! And?

[Wyrmbreaker] And Lukas puts out his hand to stop the swing.

[Wyrmbreaker]
Dice Rolled:[ 6 d10 ] 4, 8, 10, 10, 10, 10

[Ymene] The swing goes slack as soon as he touches it. There is no pressure at all. Not physically. However: what Lukas feels is something different. He touches the swing and there is a TUG, and his Rage, arguably, one of the larger parts of who he is, something that diminishes in battle, never squandered, always [righteous (glory) fucked up is this world (how dare)], always omnipresent, pit against his will -- it fades. Drains away so suddenly, so quickly, that his head will spin and his bones'll half-want to crunch [change (flare)]. There is no moon above to look at and ask, why? What just happened? But it's very nearly all gone: sudden squall, sudden calm.

[Ymene] ooc: and he's down 5 rage!

[Wyrmbreaker] That's the greater part of his rage there, down the drain, gone in an instant, not so much burnt or spent as simply -- disappeared.

Lukas lets go the chain. There's a sudden stillness inside him where a storm's eye should be, a sense that all his fury has banked to a mere pilot light's worth, a dim blue glow at the center of his soul.

Ironically, it makes him angry, and anger is not the same as rage, though perhaps intrinsically linked. And were he not angry -- outraged -- perhaps he wouldn't do as he does now, which is to stay, and to look around him, to cast around himself, and to seek the source of such an outcome. If he can see nothing out of sorts in this world, he will try in the other, turning his attention inward, and then sideways across the Barrier.

[Ymene] There is a space of time when all is silent [hushed]. Then: the swing begins to swing again. Not very loudly, not very strongly, just enough that it would be difficult to dismiss as the product of wind. If there were any wind to speak of. It is beginning to snow, and there is nothing, nothing at all, except, perhaps, a pattern in the frost [density] on the swingset's metal arc, that is in any ways unusual, and even that [dream? (you're imagining things) what do you know?] is subtle, could easily be explained away, lost. The snow falls like ash, and Lukas looks sideways.

Adjusts his eyes. He's peeking now at the umbral landscape and this is what he sees: the swingset is as dense as smoke and twice as solid; the swing is swinging in the umbra, too, back and forth, back, and back, and back, and back and forth. Still nobody in the swing itself, but -- how closely does he look? Strands, attached to the swing, working it. Pushing it, pulling it.

There are trails on the ground, snail-iridescent, moonlight-on-water tracks, and they go from the swingset [puddle, pool] off the path and toward the ghost building of the restroom. The park has yet to grow, but it is a clean place, cleansed, and no blight or blackness blots it and ruins its face.

[Wyrmbreaker] For the while that Wyrmbreaker looks across the Gauntlet, his physical self is still, wearing a dazed expression that, perhaps, well suits his state.

Then abruptly he pulls his consciousness back where it belongs. Shakes himself once, then turns resolutely away from the swinging swing to track across the snow to the restrooms. His eyes are alert for any sign, any trail in the snow.

[Ymene] There is absolutely nothing to see when he returns his vision to the [real world (true reflection)] physical world around him. No trail. No footprints. Nothing.

Well. There is a tequila bottle. All alone. Unloved. By the restrooms.

[Wyrmbreaker] Cautious now -- and just a touch hesitant, if the umbral trail had let to the ladies' room -- Lukas pushes the bathroom door open.

[Ymene] The umbral trail did indeed lead to the ladies' room. The ladies' room in Bellamonte park is empty, spacious and echoing, and the dimness within is dispelled as soon as a light is flicked on. Then, no doubt! illuminated radiance. Kate would probably like the public restrooms to be pristine [as possible], and they're not too bad. They haven't been used very often. There's not even any trash on the ground. The place looks clean as clean can possibly be clean without some serious bleach action going on. As a joke, somebody apparently duct-taped a body outline on the bathroom floor.

And the sink turns on. Water, pouring out, pouring out, black as black can be.

[Wyrmbreaker] Some part of him must be self-destructive. Seeing the water pour out like ink, dread crawls down Wyrmbreaker's spine. Simultaneously, he's struck with the urge to stick his hand under that. See if it's warm or cold. See if it feels the way it looks: pure, silken black, utterly without deviation or perturbation.

He doesn't. He learned from touching the swing where that gets you. A sense of self against self then -- he hadn't thought of it immediately, but it occurs to him now, in retrospect. Something to be filed away for later.

Lukas does, however, circle closer to the sink. He looks in the mirror. He looks at the sink, and under it. He goes into one of the toilet stalls and gets a long strand of toilet paper, the end of which he dips into the black water.

[Ymene] [let's see how fast this moves]
Dice Rolled:[ 1 d10 ] 10

[Wyrmbreaker]
Dice Rolled:[ 5 d10 ] 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 (Success x 2 at target 6)

[Ymene] The drain is clogged and the sink is filling up with that black [unreflective] water. No faster than it would, were the clog natural, were the water just left on by some unrepentent kid. But still: steadily. The sink is nearly full by the time Lukas touches that long, long strip of toilet paper to the water. And -- well. The toilet paper soaks the water up fast. Really, really, really fast. Indeed, faster than Lukas can really process. One moment, the toilet paper is white. The next, its black, and his wrist (under his coat) feels as if it was struck by [venom (ice)].

In its wake, something different. He has far more connection to the spirit than most human-born garou ever reach [of course, they die so quick]. And he feels that surge, a push, a pop. And he feels ...

... even closer than he was before.

[Ymene] ooc: two more points of gnosis for you!

[Wyrmbreaker] Lukas drops the toilet paper almost instantly, but of course, that almost makes all the difference. Perhaps it hits the ground with a splat. Perhaps it hovers. In any case, it's too late -- the water has touched him, altered him even as the swingset has, and

he's tearing open the snap-button cuff of his ski jacket to inspect his hand, his wrist.

[Ymene] It looks as if he was burned. He's blistering.

[Wyrmbreaker] "Kurva! Zkurvysyn!" Now -- now, Lukas, He of the Iron Will and Steely Resolve, He of the Control, is really, really angry. He balls up his fist and smashes the mirror above the sink, nevermind that Katherine will have to replace it. No one's here to hear him, anyway; well, except whoever or whatever the hell is behind this.

The sink looks ready to overflow. Lukas has a dim idea that he doesn't want it to do so. He doesn't bother looking for a mop or a broom or a ten foot pole; he doesn't expect that'll do any good. Reaching out with his hand, he toggles the faucet handle up and down, trying to shut it off

[Wyrmbreaker]

[Ymene] [how fast this time?]
Dice Rolled:[ 1 d10 ] 1

[Ymene] This does not work. He tries, and we'll give Lukas credit for that: he really tries. There are pieces of mirror floating on top of the black water [shouldn't they have sunk?], rising higher, and higher, and as soon as he touches the faucet handle he feels it again. Push! Pop. And he is more full of Gnosis than he has ever, ever been before [and likely ever will again]. His very marrow sings with it [more spirit than man or beast].

He also has plenty of time to leisurely regard just what is coming out of the black black water-that-isn't to attach its lamprey mouth on his face. He can see it push out of the water, slowly: humanoid, except for that mouth, no eyes, just indentation, water running off of the shape, the impression, slicking back, back, as it gathers itself, draws itself out of the water [is water], higher, higher, a vaguely feminine (human?ish) head atop a snake of water, open mouth, snake-waving on a glass cage as if hungry, coiling itself up

and ready for the strike. It looks at him, somehow, although it only has impressions where eyes should be, opens its mouth wider. The sound of water hissing gets louder.

[Wyrmbreaker] It doesn't work. Of course it doesn't work. Still, Wyrmbreaker slams the handle up and down several times, harder and harder, the way one punches remote control buttons when one knows it's running out of batteries. The jolt of spirit energy that fills him, himself to himself, like odin on the tree of life, is ignored.

The thing rising from the water is not.

Lukas backs away from the overflowing sink, which is not so much overflowing now as it is simply rising. He shouts at it, as though perhaps it will understand: "What are you? What do you want?"

[Ymene] [how fast this time?]

[Ymene] The water hits the top. Does, indeed, overflow. Where it hits the floor, the sound is an unpleasant plop. A slap. The thing (spirit?) continues to rise, and then, slowly, as if it were smoke and not water, begins to undulate toward Lukas. Its little 'jaw' opens and closes, hungrily, instinctually, nearly blindly. The water, slowly! pours toward Lukas' boots.

But it talks to him! Or he can at least pretend he hears words in a language similar to the High Tongue of the wolf-shapechanters [Hello, garou] in the hissing of the water.

Heart. Blood. Heart's blood.

[Wyrmbreaker]

[Wyrmbreaker] To which he replies, instantly and furiously, a rough, raw roar of a shout: "NO!"

By the last syllable, he's across the Gauntlet, in the otherworld, his rage and gnosis so wildly out of balance -- and so opposite to what one might expect of an Ahroun -- that the raw spiritual thereness of his own self startles him.

[Wyrmbreaker]
Dice Rolled:[ 1 d10 ] 9 (Success x 1 at target 6)

[Ymene] When Lukas peeked across the Gauntlet, the swing was moving there, too. And there was nothing there. It follows, logically, that once he is sucked across the Gauntlet, finds himself standing on the spiritual wasteland [the park is cleansed (Bronzeville is not: Weaver-calficiation, everywhere, buildings hard-as-bone, ghosts, decay], nearly burning with Gnosis, a star, something delicious, the water will still be pouring out of the sinks across the floor toward him, and the snake-woman-head thing of water will likewise still be there, coming for him.

Not so. There is no water, because there are no sinks, just pipes. The pipes give a cough, and a chug, and he feels a little bit of his Rage return -- but it's still so little, so scant, compared to what is usually his that it might as well be nothing.

Drop in the bucket.

[Wyrmbreaker] There are some Garou who are prone to accidental crossings; who seem barely able to anchor themselves to one world. Not so, Lukas, and for him to find him abruptly in one world when he expects to be in the other is... jarring.

He blinks. He looks around. No electric lights here; only the vague diffuse moonlight streaming through quasireal walls.

No sinks. No water. Just pipes. Pipes that end, perhaps, where a sink would be. He turns -- he looks through the walls at the swingset again -- then turns again, bends, carefully, peers into one of the pipes. Kicks away the umbral earth, too, to see if he can see where the pipes lead.

[Wyrmbreaker] [me too!]

[Ymene] The swing is still swinging back and forth, back and forth, back and back and back and forth. There is still no shape in the swing, not on this plane of reality, and very likely not on the next. Just those threads, tenuous, control. As he turns away to investigate the pipes, however, the swing stops swinging.

The pipes lead under the [umbral (vibrant)] earth, but very likely Lukas won't kick the umbral earth away on purpose to see where the pipes lead, because as soon as he bends to peer into one of the pipes, darkness boils out and strikes at his left eye. He doesn't manage to avoid this one. He has time to see it coming, and then his vision is halved, and suck, slurp on his eye. It feels just the way his wrist felt when whatever struck him earlier struck him.

And it divides [splits], and snakes, smoke-tendril, around him to strike through his back at his heart. He can avoid that one.

And there is a third. The first. It follows him across the Gauntlet [lightning], appears as water welling between his feet, and then it strikes -- but upwards. Under his pants. Up his calf, wind, wind, twist, twist, water pouring upwards, up his thigh, up, up.

[Wyrmbreaker] The instant blackness splashes into his eye, Lukas begins to rear back, shouting. By the time he's upright, he's not shouting but snarling, and the hand clamped to his naked face is a handpaw clamped to black fur.

The second strand of water whips up, strikes. He can avoid that one, and he does, by instinct, twisting aside fast enough to feel it comb his fur. The third is winding up his leg, and without thinking twice Wyrmbreaker simply

leaps upward, straight up, to grasp or climb onto whatever he can.

[Ymene] There isn't anything hanging over Lukas' head. He leaps upward, straight up, and there is no tree [this is the Scab, son. This park is new, seeds are sleeping, spirits still just birthing under umbral dirt, not rich enough yet, no. This is the Scab, son, ain't nothin' healing up here] or helpful overhang. However; He leaps upward. Straight up. And the thing that has his eye

plucks it out. Falls to earth. Eats it. He likely doesn't see (no joke) this happen. He's still in the air. The water that had been pouring up his body, twisting, winding around his leg -- breaks, and falls back to earth like a stream of water, splatter, splatter, hiss, dissipate. He's free! Minus one eye, which doesn't want to heal yet, but free.

Until he hits the ground again, at least.

[Wyrmbreaker] A Garou can jump very high. A Garou in warform can just about soar: a good hard push-off can result in a leap that dwarfs large houses and small buildings. He has a few seconds in the air, then, which is not a lot but better than nothing, and he loses an eye, which vexes him but not terribly; he also loses all depth perception and awareness on that side of his body, which is a greater handicap. No matter; his body breaks through the semireal barrier of the restroom's roof, continues upward, night wind in his fur now, and he thinks:

he blazes with spirit; everything else, largely sapped. Heart's blood, was that literal or figurative? No time. The apex of his ascent. Downward now, falling again, and he reaches into his handy little sack of talens -- why the hell not, when he's bursting with Gnosis -- grabs one, activates one at random, it doesn't matter which, it only matters that it burns with Gnosis --

and he throws it, not as far as he can but away from the ground directly beneath him, within twenty or thirty feet of the seething mass of not-water beneath him.

Go fetch.

Hopefully.

[Ymene] The not-water pours out of the [wraithly] restroom after the talen. And the ground beneath Lukas is dry (safe?). Whatever talen he activated disappears, under the not-water (black, blacker, blackest) which ... well, there's a lot of it. And it spreads across the park like a sheet, or begins to. A shallow sheet of darkness, gleams just like real water, ripples just like real water.

[Wyrmbreaker]

[Ymene] [ain't nothin' to see here]
Dice Rolled:[ 6 d10 ] 1, 2, 2, 6, 8, 8 (Success x 2 at target 6)

[Wyrmbreaker] Seconds later Wyrmbreaker comes back down, landing on all fours with a muted thump that shakes the earth. The dry earth. Hungry little shits, aren't they? He touches his empty eyesocket, is not particularly surprised to find it's yet to even begin healing. Fine; one eyed he'll remain for the time. He has healing talens, but he looks at the way they swarm to that use of energy and decides against it.

For the now, Lukas focuses his will (his will? that's odd.) inward to cross the Gauntlet.

[Ymene] [how much d'we get?]
Dice Rolled:[ 1 d10 ] 10

[Ymene] He threw a storm feather. That's what the blacker than black water devours. That's what Lukas activated [made burn]. The umbral skies go dark (this is how storms should be [wild (impossible)]). The air snaps with clarity, that jittery, nervous before-the-storm-hits feeling. He hits the ground and, for a second, he is safe. He focuses: tries to cross.

And finds that his desire to leave is halved -- sucked away, as surely, if not quite as violently, as his Rage had been sucked away earlier. The Gauntlet [or some other will] is keeping him, dragging at his heels, surely as gravity.

Boom! Thunder. A storm in the umbra is always an impressive thing [awe (terror)], and this is no exception. The sky cracks open: it begins to rain. Not-water, though. And as it rains, the black not-water slides [scythes] back across the park toward Lukas. And for a terrible second? He doesn't even want to move [pinned (fixed) like an insect].

The not-water is trailing up his calves, again. And it is falling on his head. The first thick splatters of (rain) storm: as soon as it touches, it hisses, half-whispering words. Heart's blood. Blood, heart. You, your. You and yours yours and you heart's bloodnowwant please. And once again, he feels something that is distinctly his pulled out. TUG.

No more Rage.
Nearly no more will.
And now? Very nearly no more gnosis, as well.

[Ymene] [so! Rage: 0. WP: 1. Gnosis: 3.]

[Ymene] [Er, Gnosis: 2.]

[Wyrmbreaker] Even as a child, Lukas was not afraid of thunder. How could he be? Thunder is in his blood, and in his ancestors' blood. Thunder is what his lineage is made of, not merely figuratively but literally, physically, spiritually. Thunder is what his pack follows now, though before they followed a whirlwind of raptors. Thunder in the form of the thunder-god: storms and eagles and oaks and war.

When the skies overhead darken, Lukas's heart gladdens

but only for a moment.

Then rain comes. Not-rain. Black fluid, whatever the fuck it is crawling out of the pipes of this godforsaken park -- cleansed, Kate said! -- pelting down from the skies. For a moment Wyrmbreaker doesn't even care anymore. He turns his face up to the sky, closes his eyes; no, correction, closes his eye and his empty socket; lets it wash over him and drive him to his hands and knees and pull from him almost everything.

All rage.
All-but-all will.
All-but-all spirit.

Caught under his handpaw: the rawhide bag of tricks. His claws feel sluggish and slow. He fumbles past vials, darts, strips of flaking stiff cloth. He finds a tiny clay bead, doesn't even have the strength of purpose to bring it to his mouth; simply crushes it beneath his claws.

And sinks wearily into the bosom of the earth, away from the sky and the rain.

And turns into the earth, clay and loam.

[-1Gn - trapdoor boon!]

[Wyrmbreaker]
Dice Rolled:[ 1 d10 ] 8 (Success x 1 at target 6)

[Ymene] And there, he finally is safe.

Above, who knows? Who knows what's happening to the spiritual reflection of Bellamonte park? Below, Lukas is safe, and the earth is cool, and the earth is quiet, and it holds him close. Some of its steadiness, its solidity, sinks through him [transitive power], will coil around his heart, and he'll find some of his will returned. Not nearly enough. When was the last time he felt this low? Did he ever, since childhood, feel so weak?

Maybe he waits, part of the dirt, for a long time. Maybe it is less out of caution, and more out of the inability to muster up the urge to do much else, maybe he is even afraid, maybe he's just tired, drained, shell-of-himself, husk, alone and palely loitering, withered. Howsoeverlong he waits, when he decides to become himself again, the water is gone. The swing is still. There's absolutely nothing, except luminous trails on the ground, toward the restroom, and -- well, all around.

When he leaves, behind him, the swing will start swinging again.

[Ymene] [final tally. Rage: 0. WP: 2. Gnosis: 2.]

ruthless if i must.

Four wives and n children are far too many to fit into Lukas's M3. So when he drives Sampson's family to visit his grave, which he does every few weeks or so, he rents a van and piles them all in.

His respects are paid to his packmates in private, silently, and in solitude. When he takes the vanful of kin and potential-future-Garou to the Caern, he stays just outside the graveyard, watchful of any who might try to bar the kin from the Graves. Sometimes the wind blows right and he can hear a snatch of conversation, though never in a language he understands.

When they come out of the graveyard tonight, the sun is setting. The small troupe heads back toward the edge of the bawn in a loose file, children clinging to their mothers' hands, Lukas bringing up the rear. It's a slow progression past shambling hangars with pigeons roosting in the rafters, over stretches of broken tarmac.

As they near the border, Chepchumba hands her child to her sister and slows her pace, eventually falling abreast of Lukas. It's obvious she wants to say something. He looks at her, curious, waiting, but when she doesn't find the words immediately -- this trained barrister, this glib and eloquent orator of a woman -- he looks away to give her time.

The setting sun paints her face in dusky golds and roses; highlights the creases of her frown. It's a warm day, but Sampson's second wife folds her lean arms around herself as though she were cold, or as though she were protecting her unborn child.

"I have been hearing things, Lukas," she says at last, "and you will not like what is being said."

The Shadow Lord turns back to her, eyebrows raised: a silent tell me more.

"There's been talk amongst the kin. I hear it when I visit the Brotherhood and Hill House. It is being said that you are dangerous, driven, not one to be crossed. That people should either fall in or get out of the way."

Lukas huffs a faint laugh. "People always say things like that about Shadow Lords, Chepchumba. I don't mind the reputation. Determination doesn't make me a tyrant. My honor still speaks for itself."

Chepchumba shakes her head, insisting, "No -- that's the point. There's more. It is known that your pack has seen many Alphas in recent months. It is known that Edward vanished and Katherine did not lead long. That you took command when she went away, and did not cede it back when she returned. It is known that Mrena, Sam and Sampson all challenged you for your position. And of that list, two are dead and one is expelled."

Lukas is frowning now, but he waits for her to say it. It takes her a moment.

"It is being said that you are responsible. That you wear an honorable face while you eliminate your enemies one by one. It is being said that you killed -- "

"I understand," Lukas breaks in, very quietly. He's silent for a moment, eyes narrowed toward the setting sun. Then, "From whom did you first hear this?"

--

The bathrooms at Hill House are a hell lot nicer than that giant, ghetto, cavernous high-school-gym affair at the Brotherhood. Here the bathrooms are segregated by sex, and every one is its own, private, self-contained little room with a sink, a toilet, a urinal that doesn't stink, and automatic flushers and paper dispensers and water faucets.

Jones likes them a lot better than the ones at BroHo. They give him a chance to take a moment. To give himself a little breather before heading back out there to face down the other kin and their nonstop babymama drama, and the Garou and their goddamn tempers. It gives him a moment to wash his hands -- with good moisturizing handwash, not the bars of lye that pass for soap at BroHo -- and rub his face and lean over the sink to rest his forehead against the mirror for a second.

When he opens his eyes, he's not alone anymore. He recognizes the pale blue eyes and the black hair, the height, and the rage, my god, the rage. He recognizes these things if only because he's been gabbing about them so damn often recently, always out of his hearing, of course, but the trouble with rumors is that they spread and ripple and chain-effect and

what goes around comes around.

Jones doesn't even pretend this is a nice social visit. He averts his eyes and heads for the door, pretending Lukas doesn't exist, pretending with the desperate determination of a man totally unable to cope with the thought of his own and very likely imminent demise that he can just walk away and this will disappear.

He takes two steps, which takes him exactly as far across the room that he's in the clear, he won't be able to hit the walls or the sinks or the mirrors and make a commotion even if he flailed with arms and legs outstretched. The Ahroun is on him then, grabs him around the middle and lifts him clear off the ground, clamps his hand over his mouth and pinches his nose shut.

And Jones does flail. His arms and legs swing wildly at empty air. He's trying to scream -- for help or mercy or something of the sort -- but with his airways firmly blocked he can't even make the breath in his lungs move far enough to vibrate his vocal cords. The only sound in the bathroom is the rustling of fabric, the occasional thud of a limb connecting with a head, a torso.

Lukas holds him there, suspended, asphyxiating, while the struggling mounts, turns panicked, loses coherence, starts to fade. Seconds before blackout, the Ahroun lets the kinsman go, drops him in a haphazard sprawl on the bathroom floor.

Hauls him back up. Puts his back to the wall, grasps his shoulders like a man might a misbehaving child.

"You have been telling lies about my packmates and I," he says, level and low, "and they are unforgiveably insulting.

"You have taken my packmates' memories, their sacrifices, the final worth of entire lifetimes dedicated to a war fought for your sake ... and reduced them to some sordid little story about power struggles and betrayal. You've done this in blatant disrespect of me, my packmates, and our tribal ties to Thunder. You've done this, as far as I can tell, for your own twisted amusement.

"If I were half so vindictive as you think, you'd drown in your own blood now."

A beat.

"But I'm not.

"This rumor ends now. You started this fire. You're an imaginative, creative little bastard. You can find a way to put it out.

"Do it because you believe me. Do it because you believe in my honor, the proof of which is in your continued little existence. Or do it because you don't believe me. Do it because you have enough sense to understand basic logic."

Lukas's hands shift. Tighten. He locks Jones's head in place, crowds him to the wall, lowers his head and gets right in his face. The blue eyes are fierce, fixed, anger within control like a fire in the heart of a glacier. His tone is velvet soft.

"Because if you think I'd kill my own packmates, the blood of my blood, for opposing me ... what do you think I'd do to a pathetic, traitorous little cockroach like you?"

Another second ticks by. Ten. Then, abruptly, the Shadow Lord releases his kinsman. Jones is swaying on his feet, ashen-faced, sweating. He stares at Lukas, pants for breath, edges sideways one step at a time, watching for reaction. There is none. Jones gets around Lukas and makes for the door again, quicker now, and when Lukas drops a hand to his shoulder he lets out a hoarse, startled yelp.

"One more thing," Lukas says. "I'd be quick about shutting your friends up, if I were you. Because if I hear this rumor or anything like it again, anywhere, I'm going to assume you're still talking."

the diamond life.

It's early Saturday, the 2nd of May, 1:22am. Lukas is walking across the lobby of the W Chicago Lakeshore, the glittering, expensive lobby with its blonde woods, its frosted glass, its pale and square-edged furniture.

He has a fistful of fabric in his hand. Black and purple, satin and chantilly lace, hooks and eyes, dangling straps swinging free of his fingers. It's unmistakably a woman's lingerie, and expensive, and provocative.

People are staring. Lukas doesn't care. He walks straight out, finds the valet captain and snaps at the man to make him hurry, but not because he's angry.

He's not angry; he's numb. He just wants to get away from here.

The MKZ is brought around. The valet boy that climbs out smiles at Lukas, but the smile pales as the Ahroun comes at him. He skitters to the side, but Lukas isn't going at him after all; he's going for his car. He gets in the driver's side, stuffs a bill into the valet's hand without looking. Throws the lingerie on the floor of the passenger's side and slams the driver's door shut hard enough to make the car rock.

The valet attendant is baffled. "What was that all about?"

His captain is signing the MKZ out, not looking up. "No idea."

"I thought he was going to kill me, and you know what he did?"

"Nope. What?"

"He tipped me a hundred bucks."

--

It's 1:48am, the 2nd of May. The MKZ rolls to a stop in the alley beside the Brotherhood. Lukas kills the engine and he just sits there for a while. He just sits there.

He hears her say:

I've had enough.

He hears her say:

This is killing me.

He hears himself say:

You'll survive.

He hears her say:

Miluji tě, Lukáš.

He looks up at the second story of the Brotherhood. He can see his window from here, and it's dark. There are no lights on in his room, but Mrena's light is on; so is Sampson's. There's no one in his room, but his packmates are around, and the thought of facing them like this makes him inexplicably furious. It makes him sick to his stomach.

He turns the key in the ignition. The engine's still hot, and it catches easily. The MKZ's taillights flash at the exit of the alley. It turns right, toward the heart of the city.

--

It's 2:16am, the 2nd of May. The club's name is SUBTeRRANeAN, and it's as good as any. The girl at the door wants to put a stamp on his hand. It's a four-point star, blue, like a russian prison tattoo.

"You just missed last call," the girl tells him, "but the bar reopens at 4. And we kick you out at 7."

I won't be here til then, he thinks to himself. And then he thinks, Yes I will.

--

It's 2:16pm, the 2nd of May. Lukas's neck aches. His head pounds. It's stiflingly hot. He opens his eyes: he's in the front seat of the MKZ. He fumbles for his cellphone, checks the time. He's been asleep six hours or so. SUBTeRRANeAN is a block down, and it's morphed from a surreal world of million-dollar light systems and million-watt sound systems into a plain, indistinguishable concrete block. It looks like a goddamn warehouse. It was a goddamn warehouse before it was a club. There's a bum pushing a shopping cart in front of it. It's like Cinderella after midnight, he thinks, and if there's symbolism there he doesn't care enough to tease it out.

He should go home, he thinks. He should at least call, let them know when he expects to be back. He should shower.

Lukas turns the phone off instead and throws it in the glove compartment. He starts the engine. Five minutes later he pulls into the first parking lot of the first inn he sees and checks in.

He takes a shower, throws off all his clothes, climbs under the covers, sleeps.

--

It's 12:26am, the 3rd of May. The club's name is Circle, and it's as good as any. The boy at the door wants to put a stamp on his hand. It's a circle, black, and it stamps across the faded four-point star.

"Cool," the boy says, "SUBTeRRANeAN is awesome."

--

He doesn't know what time it is. It's still the 3rd of May, but it's late enough -- early enough -- that the so-called VIP room is nearly empty. In this semiprivate booth with its dim lighting and its muffling curtain on its rail, the scent of spilt alcohol is thick and it's hot and airless.

"I love your eyes," she says, and he shifts his legs to give her room to kneel between them. "They're so fucking hot."

How can eyes be so fucking hot? he wonders. It didn't make sense to him. He wishes she'd just shut the fuck up. She's blonde too, but he sees the dark roots when she bends her head. He closes his eyes. She's undoing his fly and he's still wearing the same pair from last night, and he reminds himself to buy new clothes in the morning, because he's not going home.

Afterward she's spitting into a tissue she's pulled from her purse and he's barely breathing faster. He still has half a Tokyo Tea on the table, and he picks it up and drinks a sip, hands the rest to her.

"Do you want to come back to my place?" she wants to know. She climbs onto the seat beside him and starts to curl against him.

Lukas stands up. He can't even work up the strength of will required for basic kindness, basic courtesy.

"No," he says.

--

It's 1:22am, the 4th of May. The club's name is Ontourage, and it's as good as any. The girl at the door puts another star on his hand, but the first one is covered up by a circle, a triangle, a dog, an 8-ball.

"Maybe I better put it on your other hand," she says. Lukas gives her his left hand. She stamps a five-point star on it, and it's green.

--

"Here baby," she says, "try this."

He's too drunk to stand, but not too drunk to twist his head away instinctively from whatever pill she's trying to push on him.

"Don't call me that," he says. Then he takes the pill from her.

Twenty minutes later he feels great, he feels amazing, he feels just fine and he's convinced he's just fine and she whispers for him to meet her in the women's room and he nods, but when she's gone he goes to the coat check and his pupils are a little dilated and his skin is flushed and he's so fucking thirsty. He gets his coat and he leaves.

--

It's 1:04am, the 5th of May. The club's name is Red, and it's as good as any. They don't stamp your hand here. They just brush a stripe of red over your knuckles.

--

He's bored out of his fucking head. It's the same people, the same music, the same faceless masses, so he scores a joint from the fox-pretty girl in the underground room where they play nothing but drums'n'bass, nothing but headpounding rhythms drilled inhumanly fast. He can still feel it pounding in his blood when he steps outside into the cool night air, and he leans against the wall a ways away from the line and lights up and as the first curl of marijuana unfurls in his blood he closes his eyes and wonders

what. the fuck. is wrong with me.

and he knows it has something to do with trust, or lack thereof, and security, and insecurity, and love and fear, which is close to loathing, and

he recognizes the girl that's walking across the street; it's Gabriella. She reminds him of her sister, her brother, his packmates, his pack back at the Brotherhood, and jesus christ he hasn't been home in days, they probably think he's dead, only no, they don't think that because they can feel him, they're all bonded together, there's no such thing as privacy in a pack and if he went home now they'd look at him, see right through him, they'd see right through to the bottom

(the way she always did, and could)

and see that he was not okay, he was not fine, he was in pieces and all the king's horses and men couldn't put his ass back together again.

Fuck off, Gabbie, he thinks, but here she comes, and he already knows what to say, how to say it, how to make her go away.

--

It's 3:45am, the 5th of May. The club's name is Vain, and it's as good as any.

--

It's 10:43am, the 5th of May. Someone's knocking on the flimsy motel door and he's kicked all the covers to the floor; the window is shut but the air conditioner's blasting and he's freezing his ass off but when he got in here this morning he was burning up, he was burning up and his pupils were blown again, and this time he felt better, but not good, not okay, not fine.

He doesn't even feel better right now. He feels like shit, and it's Mrena knocking on his door; he can tell because he can smell her.

Fuck off, Mrena, he thinks, you can be Alpha. I don't care. Fuck off and leave me alone. I. don't. care.

--

It's 12:31am, the 6th of May. The club's name is Jbar, and it's as good as any.

--

It's 2:10am, the 6th of May. The club's name is Egypt, and it's as good as any.

--

It's 1:53am, the 7th of May. The club's name is Escape, and it's as good as any.

--

"We're sisters," they giggle. "We're not twins but we look just like each other, that's what all the guys say."

You do, he thinks. You look just like each other. You all look the same. You're all the same, you're all sheep, and I can't fucking stand any of you.

He opens his mouth to tell them this, but what comes out is:

"Which one of you am I fucking first?"

--

It's 3:26am, the 7th of May. The club's name is Psykotik, and it's as good as any.

--

It's 5:46am, the 8th of May. The club's name is Psyche, and it as good as any.

--

"You fucker," he says. "That's my girlfriend."

The girlfriend in question is a slip of a girl, bottle-red, watching wide-eyed from the frame of Psyche's back door. She looks a little scared. She looks a lot thrilled. Lukas can almost smell the chemicals. Whoever wins, that's who she's going home with tonight. That's what she thinks, anyway. That's what he thinks she's thinks, and Lukas can be cynical, cynical.

"You fucker," he says again, and then he shoves Lukas back against the wall, hard.

He's not as tall as the Ahroun but he's built like a brick shithouse, wide and solid. Lukas is mildly surprised to find that it hurts when his jaw makes contact with the boyfriend's fist; the blow snaps his head to the side, and the girlfriend makes an excited little gaspy noise, and Lukas thinks, I could look as deep as I like and I'll find nothing but dullness in you, either of you, any of you.

The boyfriend drives his fist into his stomach next, and Lukas doubles over. "You fucker," he says yet again, and turns to look at his girlfriend to make sure she was watching, and Lukas thinks of sheep bleating over would-be mates, clashing horns over mating rights; Lukas thinks of the brick shithouse on top of the bottle-red slip, he thinks of them copulating stupidly, mechanically, like sheep, and then the image shifts; he thinks of sheep-men on top of someone else entirely; he thinks of her legs around their waists or over their shoulders; he thinks of her gasping

ano. ano. prosím. dej mi to.

and he doesn't understand how she can stand them, they who were so fucking empty inside that he could look as deep as he wanted and never, ever see light like hers inside them.

And Lukas is suddenly enraged. He steps forward and the next punch the boyfriend throws hits nothing but air, arcs right over his head as he ducks under and into it; he drives the other back against the opposite wall with his shoulder and pins him there, draws his fists back and starts hammering. His knuckles batter muscle to mush, shear tendons with their sheer brutality. A rib snaps. Organs deform and bruise. The boyfriend is coughing up blood, slumping, and he doesn't care. He keeps at it, his fists slamming into the other's torso over and over, a freight train behind each blow, and the girl isn't gasping or tittering now, she's screaming, she's pulling at his arm to try to get him to stop and he throws her off and she's yelps when she hits the ground; she's screaming now, and he looks back at what he's doing to realize he's grabbed the boyfriend by the collar and has been slamming the heel of his hand into his nose again and again and again, crushing bone to shards, to slivers, and if he didn't stop soon he was going to kill him.

His hand comes open. The man slides bonelessly to the alley floor. His girlfriend is crying so hard long runners of snot are hanging out her nose, and she crawls over to him and shrieks incoherently at Lukas.

All Lukas can think to say is, "Promiňte. Promiňte," and the truth is he's not sure who he's talking to. He turns and walks away, swiftly.

--

It's 12:52am, the 9th of May. The club's name is Blue Line, and it's as good as any.

--

"Do you want to meet me in the bathroom?" she asks.

The lights turn her blonde hair blue and purple. It turns her skin blue and purple. It turns her eyes green.

"No," he says. "My car."

She flinches a little when he takes her hand. She doesn't even seem to notice. She doesn't say anything stupid; she hasn't told him how hot his eyes are, or that she looks like someone's twin, or that her boyfriend was going to kill him if he finds out. She hasn't offered him Ecstasy, or even ecstasy; she hasn't offered him pot, and she hasn't offered him poppers, uppers, downers, designer pills.

Just herself.

Maybe that's why after, when the windows are a little fogged up from their breath and she's shifting to the side so he can get out from under her and move over to the driver's seat and she asks, "Do you want to come over to my place?" he doesn't answer no immediately.

Her heel catches on something as she's settling back into the passenger's seat. She looks down, inquisitive; when she picks it up off the car floor it turns out to be thong panties, purple and black, satin and chantilly lace, ridiculously expensive, ridiculously erotic.

She gives him a look. He returns it levelly. She doesn't say anything about it, and this makes up his mind.

"I have a room at the Holiday Inn about five minutes away," he says.

--

It's 3:52am, the 9th of May. She's curled against his side and her body is narrow and thin; she feels almost right but she smells completely wrong.

He stares at the ceiling and he wonders what he's doing here, and he's not sure if here means with this woman, in this bed, at this hotel, or in this city. In this state of mind. He's not sure when it went so wrong, where he let down his guard, how he's ...

come undone.

She moves. She kisses the line of his jaw. She says, "I've never felt this way before."

And he closes his eyes.

"Don't," he says. "Don't do that."

"Do what?" She's puzzled, drawing back, a shadow in the darkness.

He sits up. "Don't make this out to be more than it is. You don't know what you're talking about. You think this is something real, but it's not."

"No, wait -- "

"Shut up and listen. You looked at me and you just had to get fucked by me, and you're mistaking that for some sort of love at first sight. It's not. It's just goddamn chemicals. It's just instinct. It's curiosity and the thrillseeker's fatal attraction to danger. It's what's kept proto-man chasing after wolves and tigers for eons, painting pictures on cave walls to commemorate the beauty of the very thing that would, without a thought, tear them to shreds."

She gets up and turns her back suddenly; he tries to summon up some shred of compassion, some shred of sympathy, fails utterly. It's the destroyed man's urge to destroy, he realizes; the urge to make everything else into what you are.

"God, you people disgust me," he sighs, and watches her shoulders slump. He can't seem to stop. "Always assigning significance to the shit that'll kill you because somehow that makes it okay for you. This is not significant. This is as empty as anything else in your pathetic, ordinary little life. It has no meaning. It won't gain any meaning, and it won't give you any meaning. So don't even try to pretend."

She's crying now, silently. Her shoulders shake.

"Get the fuck out," he says; not angrily; wearily, almost gently. "Call a cab from the lobby."

He turns his back and closes his eyes.

--

It's 1:11am, the 10th of May. The club's name is 550, and it's as good as any. There have been so many stamps that the backs of his hands are smeared, are smudged, are bruise-colored with stamps overlapping and stacking and washed off and renewed.

This one's turquoise blue. It's simple, a 5 and a 5 and a 0 forming a ring around the two digits.

--

He's seen so many lean, long-legged blondes in so many clubs in the last week he isn't sure it's her the first time he sees her. Then the crowds part again. 550 is narrow but deep; barely fifteen feet across, but a good seventy-five, hundred feet long. They're sitting against opposite walls, and there isn't a lot of room between them. He can see her clearly this time, and it's her, there's no doubt. He stares.

The next time he sees her she's standing in the middle of the dance floor. She's not dancing. She looks gorgeous, and lazy, and she looks like a slut. Her shirt is nearly see-through when the lights hit her right. The lights paint her blue and purple and green.

She's looking right at him. Her eyes don't need the lights to look green. They never did.

He gets up and goes to her.

--

She says, meet me in the bathroom, and he goes.
She says, jsem mokrá a chci vás uvnitř mě.
She says, I need.

He thinks, you don't know anything about need, only that's not true.

She says, I can handle it.
He says, Maybe I can't.

He says, I need to think. I'm sorry, Danička, I need time to think.

--

He doesn't know what time it is. It's night time, but only barely. He thinks it's still the 10th of May but he could be wrong.

He scrubs his hands under the tap, over and over and over, and a week's worth of ink is smearing off his skin. The colors run together and drip down his fingers, filthy. Ink, mixed to a dull grey-black color, flecks the inside of the sink. He washes his hands until his skin is bare and pink, and the last of the ink has swirled down the drain.

Then he throws his clothes off -- his new clothes, one of a pile that he bought back on ... what day was that? It doesn't matter. They're all new, all worn once and tossed aside, a pile in the closet. He hasn't been back to the Brotherhood in ten days. He's lived in this motel room for ten days. Every morning he gets in sometime between dawn and noon; he orders takeout food; he eats it, sometimes before he sleeps and sometimes after. He leaves the boxes scattered around the room. Every night he's gone by midnight, and usually by the time he's back they've been thrown away for him. The bed is made. The detritus of his daily life has been wiped away, and the room is characterless and blank again.

He's sick of it. He's ready to go home.

He crawls under the covers and closes his eyes.

--

It's 12:14am, the 11th of May. The Brotherhood is the way he left it. He parks in the alley and looks up at his darkened window, waiting for the revulsion, the aversion, the desire to drive the fuck away and not come back for days.

It doesn't come. There's only a vague sense of shame, of having abandoned his post for an unconscionable time, of having neglected his duties, of, very likely, having hurt the people who should, by all rights, matter to him. He suspects the feeling will be a lot stronger in the morning, but for now it's only academic, only a faint reminder of itself.

So Lukas kills the engine and gets out. His trunk is full of clothes; he leaves them there. He'll get them in the morning.

The kitchen door unlocks. He steps inside, and mounts the steps to the upper story.

waylaid.

1.30.2009
5:44pm

The last of the dusk is fading from the sky when Lukas descends the stairs of the Brotherhood, turns his collar up against the wind, and pushes out the back door. His ford is parked in the alley, but he finds he'd rather walk tonight. It's not so far to the Mile, and besides, he anticipates they'll be dragging trophies to the caern when all's said and done.

The streets around the Caern are mean and rough. Shambling buildings. Rusty cars. Shady characters loitering on streetcorners and on stoops by day; streetwalkers and hustlers at night. A man like Lukas would be an easy mark: too well-dressed for this area, unbowed by time and circumstance. But Lukas is not a man but a Garou. The rules are different for him.

He walks -- not fast, but purposefully, with a clear direction in mind. He cuts through dark alleys, crosses streets; proceeds steadily northeast. The wind is in his face and he keeps his head down, his newsboy cap jammed tightly on.

"Spare a buck, man?"

He's heading for battle. He's thinking about tactics and formations, about what might lie in wait, about what he might do to assure that his pack survives this, rises above this, succeeds in what they have to do. He's thinking about what he might leave behind, too, if he doesn't survive this. Who and what and where, the loose ends of a life shorn suddenly in its prime. He's thinking --

"Hey, man, just a buck, I ain't ate for days."

"No." Lukas is faintly irritated; most bums gave up if you didn't look at them. This one's persistent, jogging to keep up. Lukas takes a sharp turn into a tight alley, hoping to lose him in the crowded darkness.

"Come on man, just a dollar, or whatever you wanna give me. Just a buck, I'm starving, man -- " and he reaches out and grabs Lukas by the arm, his gnarled, grimy fingers twisting into the fine wool of the Shadow Lord's coat.

Lukas pulls his arm sharply out of his grasp. Turns on him, sudden enough to make him quail. "Don't touch me."

But the panhandler reaches for him again, locking both hands around his elbow this time. His eyes dart over the Ahroun's shoulder, and alarms are just beginning to tingle in Lukas' mind when the bum starts shouting, hoarse, his voice breaking:

"[i]Come on, what are you waiting for? I got 'im, just like you told me! I got 'im, now come on![/i]"

Lukas shoves the panhandler back. He hits the opposite wall with a grunt. The Ahroun snapshifts on instinct, and not an instant too soon -- a loop of razorwire lands around his neck and pulls viciously tight, shearing through the thick fur of his ruff, biting into the flesh. The bum is pressed back into a corner between a dumpster and a stack of rotting crates, pissing himself, gibbering. Wyrmbreaker can hear a high tittering laugh behind him, boyish, nasty, and the wire jerks another notch tighter.

"Dude! This is way better than that dog we did!"

Wyrmbreaker doesn't think twice. He doesn't think at all. He catches his distorted reflection in a dirty pane of glass -- reaches out with his spirit -- [i]pushes[/i] --

([b]pop.[/b])

Otherside now. The lacerating noose had simply ceased to exist. The pain was still there, sharp and bright as a new coin, but with every heartbeat his flesh closes in on itself, resealing, healing.

He can feel his rage, too. That does not heal. That does not subside. It grows, furious, outraged by the insult and the injury --

that he had been somehow stalked, marked, led like a prey-animal to this trap where two humans, two subhuman wyrm-things, wanted to use him as their prey. As their toy.

-- until he must tamp it down almost physically. It would do him no good to cross back in a frenzy, unable to think, unable to plan. It would do him no good to plunge thoughtlessly into combat.

His temper leashed, the Ahroun presses his mind against the Gauntlet; opens not his body's eyes but his mind's, and looks across the barrier.

--

"Where'd he go?" Stark puzzlement; then a rising, irrational fury. "That's NOT FAIR, that's FUCKING CHEATING, he can't just DISAPPEAR LIKE THAT."

There are two boys. The younger can't be much older than twelve or thirteen, freckled, with the sort of sunbleached blond hair that would darken as he aged. He looks like someone's little brother, some suburban soccer mom's little boy, if not for the fact that his body is packed, knotted, twisting and bulging with surreally hypertrophied musculature. His skeleton tops out at a boy's height; on that five feet or so of height is perhaps two, two hundred fifty pounds of muscle. His ripped jeans look ready to split down the seams. His skater-tee barely manages to encase the breadth of his chest, the circumference of his biceps. He's vibrating with wrath, gnashing his teeth, sweating even in the chill.

There's a length of razor wire in his hands, the ends wrapped to keep from cutting his own hands, the middle stretch red with an Ahroun's blood.

His friend is older, though the only real way to judge is by stature and, perhaps, temperament. He seems steadier, less prone to bounce between bouts of glee and fury. His face is hidden behind a hockey mask, Jason-style. He wears denim overalls, no shirt, no coat -- no shoes even. He doesn't seem to feel the cold at all. There's a gas-operated chainsaw in his hands.

"Chill out," he tells the younger. "He'll be back."

"I wanted to cut his head off. You said I could. You said! Cut his fucking head off and EAT HIS BRAINS. Did you see [i]Blood Vengeance of Krokk?[/i] DUDE." Moodswing, instantaneous. "It was the most awesome thing EVER, Krokk rapes this slut with a broken broomstick until it comes out her stomach, but she's STILL ALIVE, and then he cuts her head off with razor wire just like this one, and there was blood everywhere, if you pause at exactly 12:13:42 you can see the INSIDE OF HER NECK. And the TUBES and SQUISHY SHIT. Do you think it really looks like that? With like, dangly tubes and squishy shit?"

"I don't know." The older boy's voice is muffled through his hockey mask. The muscles in his chest bunch and flex as he yanks he ripcord of the chainsaw. It only takes him one pull to bring it to life. Then he rolls his head on his shoulders. "Let's find out." He nods at the bum, still incoherent in his flimsy refuge. "Hold him still. And keep your fucking fingers out of the way, unless you wanna lose 'em."

--

Wyrmbreaker has seen enough. He pulls his mind back, finds himself in the moonlit, ghostly world of the umbra again. He pushes against the Gauntlet, mind and body this time, feels it give, feels himself moving across...

...excruciatingly slow this time. It takes seconds on end, seconds he did not have. The world swims into view. The bum is dead; the air is coppery with blood. The younger boy is laughing, a high, excited, not entirely sane sound. The older's chainsaw is growling in his hand, and he wipes blood off his chest, almost thoughtfully.

"DUDE THAT WAS AWESOME. THAT WAS THE BEST THING EV--"

Wyrmbreaker, a black beast of tooth and claw, lunges at their backs. But the older boy-monster's senses are sharper than he'd expected. He wheels around, brings the chainsaw up, revs it up. The basso snarl of the power saw turns to a tenor scream. Its timbre and pitch change abruptly as the spinning, serrated chain bites deep into the Shadow Lord's flesh. While the younger boy is still staring slack-jawed, Wyrmbreaker roars with pain, and then with rage.

His claws flash out. He tears the fucking hockey mask off. He tears half of the older boy's face off, too -- a spray of arterial blood steaming hot on the alley walls.

This jolts the younger boy into action.

Things go fast after that. The younger of the two whips his razorwire out like a chain, seeking to grapple the black beast suddenly rampaging in their midst, but the monstrosity is too fast, too strong. The last few feet of the razorwire snaps off, sending chips and sharp-slicing metal flying in all directions. Wyrmbreaker snaps at the chainsaw-wielding boy again, and his nerve fails him, he turns, he runs, Wyrmbreaker bears him down from behind and crushes his head in his teeth.

The younger boy is screaming in mindless rage now, lashing at the werewolf's back with his razored chain, using it like a whip now. The wire strips off a stripe of fur and flesh, but it's mostly fur, not a lot of flesh, and now Wyrmbreaker is turning his fury on him now, wheeling around, hackles up, eyes glaring pale, and he drives his claws into the younger boy's side.

The claws detach. Remain stuck in the flesh, pinning the boy-monster's shirt against his body. But Wyrmbreaker had underestimated the boy's tenacity, his courage and his strength -- he'd left an angle unguarded, just for a moment, which is a moment too long.

The boy flicks his wrist, whips the chain out against the Shadow Lord's underbelly. The razors slice deep; they sink in. The boy [b]pulls[/b].

Wyrmbreaker's abdominal wall opens up as neatly as if someone found a hidden zipper and undid it. The damage is catastrophic. He can, in the last surreal seconds of his life, hear his blood pattering down on the ground, hissing as it melts the dirty snow. He can feel the last of his strength drain out of him as his joints unlock.

Wyrmbreaker hits the alley floor.

The twisting blue flame of his rage burns, burns ... burns out.

--

And sparks back to life.

--

And blazes into a bonfire.

There's no such thing as control now. White-hot, his rage is a force of nature, a monster with its own will, and it floods out of his deepest reserves, unstoppable, reknits the worst of the damage with its own sheer fury, burns through the walls and the cages and the chains that Wyrmbreaker imposes on himself, reveals them for the flimsy things they really are.

His entrails are still spilling out of his body. His blood is still a rapidly spreading pool. He does not care; he does not feel any of this. He lunges, he drags himself forward, his eyes empty of anything but hate and rage, and he goes for the boy-monster with everything he has.

And the boy falters before this onslaught. He throws his chain out, desperately; manages to entangle the Ahroun for a second; scrambles for his dead compatriot's chainsaw, still rumbling on the alley floor. Behind him, the Ahroun has thrashed, clawed, bitten his way through the bindings. The boy raises the chainsaw, but he doesn't even have time to turn before Wyrmbreaker descends on him from behind, an engine of destruction in black fur and white teeth.

The penultimate thing the boy feels is the werewolf's hot paws on his back, hot breath on his neck.

The last thing: the werewolf's teeth, tearing through his spine.

--

It's hours before Wyrmbreaker awakens from ... wherever it is his mind goes during the frenzy, and after it.

He finds himself on the alley floor in his underclothes, filthy and freezing, the white of his undershirt and the grey of his undershorts stained red with blood, the remains of his clothing scattered about.

He finds a gas-less chainsaw; a broken stretch of razorwire.

He finds a dead bum, almost unrecognizable.

And he finds the remains of two gorehounds, wholly unrecognizable now, little more than shreds of meat and gristle and bone.

Slowly, Lukas gets up. Sways for a moment, lightheaded, thoroughly weary. His wounds have already closed themselves, sometime between the time he succumbed to frenzy and the time he fell unconscious, spent and limp in its aftermath. There's a new tightness to the skin of his abdomen, his side, that had not been there before. When he rolls his shirt up (the blood drying and stiff-frozen, flaking off onto his fingers) he sees the mark there, long and thin, pale against his swarthy skin: a new scar, and one he'll wear to the end of his days.

He lets his shirt fall back into place. He would like nothing more than to go home. Go somewhere safe. He would like nothing more than to curl up with his pack and sleep for a thousand years in the warmth, the elemental comfort of their presence.

Instead, Lukas Wyrmbreaker bends to the task of cleaning the mess up. Preferably before the humans find it.
