[Wyrmbreaker] [okay, this is gonna be dice-heavy! we're going to keep as close to the original battle as possible. map is up here: http://www.chicagodusk.com/index.php?jove=gallery&picture=5516

as usual, 10 min for posts, 3 min for declares, 2 for rolls! if you're too slow we'll just skip you and move on!]

[Wyrmbreaker] 2, 3am Sunday morning: Wyrmbreaker and the rest of the Garou -- the surviving Garou -- return from Moraine Hills. Most go to mourn Kemp in the Caern.

Wyrmbreaker goes to the Loft. He goes to the BroHo. He gathers up four of his pack; the six spot, he saves for a guest -- the Alpha and Galliard of the Dark Sky pack, who he introduces to the rest as they're packing to go. Weapons. Talens. As though they were going to war -- though that's not exactly it.

"We're going to the Battleground Realm," he explains as they follow Caleb and Theron into the Umbra. "It's an umbral realm where every battle that's ever happened replays over and over. Great training for Ahrouns and other warriors. You can watch, or you can participate. We're going to participate in tonight's battle in the basement. If you haven't already heard, Truth in Frenzy-rhya died tonight because he took hits that a bunch of Cliath Ahrouns didn't. They're claiming it was unavoidable, bad luck, and that they did their best. I'm not sure I believe that.

"To be fair," he adds this, makes this point, "they did seem to learn from it. They came back scarred and beaten, apparently all from taking hits for each other. That's to their credit. They're just having trouble swallowing the part that isn't. So I want to see what really went down. And I want to see if we can't pull this shit off with minimal casualties.

"I've asked Stormbreaker of Dark Sky to come along as a neutral Galliard and witness."

The umbra changes around them. Soon they come to a vast plain echoing with the din of battle, heady with the smell of blood, viscerae, glorious fucking death. Signposts, creaking and cracked, point the way to infinite battles --

-- and perhaps without their theurges, they might have wandered for hours before finding the right one.

ELK GROVE COMMUNITY CENTER: BASEMENT

"We're going to fight first," Lukas says. "We're going to go in as blind as possible, react as they had to. When we're finished, we'll see what they did, and how."

The cobblestoned path they've been following has receded to faint tracks in the dirt. Ahead, there's a sharp rise -- beyond which they can see nothing.

"Let's prepare."

[okay, roll any and all activations now!]

[Banshee] Iona stayed as far from Lukas as possible, still angry with him, with his words. Maybe after he sees, they all see, then he will understand.

She shifted to Hispo, the same form she was in not hours before. Still feeling the pain from the wounds she took. (3A) But she bites back the pain for now. This time, she'll do it her way. No soak talen. And if the battle is true to its words, her 'spectral' self would activate the Stormfeather, and therefore, Preun will be with her.

[Wyrmbreaker] [Note that I'm going to roughly map it out like this in terms of attacks and whatnot:
Lukas - Kemp
Sinclair - sM
Kate - Sol
Mila - Kire
Iona - herself

[Warcry] Sinclair is about as excited about this as one can be about anything after fighting all night, sleeping for a few hours, and then getting roused awake. It's entirely possible Lukas or Katherine slapped her face to get her to do more than roll over and mumble, but considering her mother, as loving and nurturing a woman as you'll ever meet, had to pinch her occasionally to get her ass out of bed, she don't mind none. She dressed quick, packed up to shield and heal, and headed out.

On their way in, she's been bouncing occasionally on the balls of her feet, peering at signposts. Maybe Katherine has touched her shoulder and indicated that no, she can't go watch the Invasion of Normandy right now, they're busy.

She digs around in her pockets of a dedicated jacket, but they don't seem big enough to hold what she pulls out. Looking around, she gives a little nod to Banshee and tosses her a small black button with a quartered circle scrawled on it in white. She takes another for herself, pins it to her jacket, and the symbol glows faintly blue for a moment before fading entirely. Now it's just a black button, glossy and purposeless.

Then: gourds. She gives one to Iona, one to Kate, and one to Mila, just... y'know. In case. Cracking her neck, grinning, she snarls her way down into Hispo, metal bars and rings still glinting in her ears.

[-1WP Resist Pain
-1G Soak Talen
1 Gaia's Breath talen given to Iona, Kate, and Mila
1 Soak talen given to Iona]

[Banshee] Iona takes the talens in her hispo form, and moves them around with her mouth til they seem to hang on her neck from a hidden collar. Then button is picked up with her mouth, and she gives Sinclair a funny look. What is this, Warcry? Said as it gets tucked into a steel gauntlet around her left front leg.

[Honor's Compass] Truth's Meridian adopts her snowy white Hispo form once they are across the Gauntlet, into the Realm. She calls upon the Gift of the Lune, alongside her Alpha, a soft glow enveloping her fur. It is not the only she summons, the strength of Bear's Gift to resist pain is also requested; and she cracks a gourd over her fur to further aid in the soaking of any mystical blows she might receive.

Perun's boon extends only so far, and tonight; it is the Philodox who makes her way into battle without him.

[So! Tally:
- Soak Talen Activated
- Luna's Armor on
- Resist Pain on (-1WP)
- 1 GB from Sinclair stowed]

[Stormbreaker] Mila had been a quiet dark figure lurking a few steps off. She didn't know any of them, save Wyrmbreaker, but was honored to be invited to join. Perhaps after all this, she could get to know them better...

A nod of thanks was given to Sinclair for the talen as well as a little smirk - must have thought she needed it? Well.. she might! She was so much better at playing guitar then killing big things. The Gaia's breath was neatly tucked away before she shifted to her dark, very dark.. hispo form. She had no fancy gifts, or talens of her own to use.. but she'd keep the GB close at hand.

[Warcry] She sits back as the two Fosterns of their pack glow, calling upon armor granted them by Gift and Goddess, and lifts one hind leg to scratch at her scruff. Her tongue lolls out a bit. Shield talen. Punk rock style. w00t.

[Banshee] She seemed to nod. Thank you, Sister.

[Waking Dream] [A'ight. In the interest of getting this shit on the road while I still catch up! Lila's shifting her ass to Crinos then getting her Luna's Armor on. That's it for preparation! IC post forthcoming, honest to god! -1G]
Dice Rolled:[ 8 d10 ] 3, 5, 5, 6, 6, 9, 9, 10 (Success x 5 at target 6)

[Waking Dream] Lila listens as Lukas explains why they're going to the Battleground Realm and looks about as inscrutable as it's possible for the Child of Gaia galliard to look. She listens, and she follows, noting the moods of the other garou who're making this trip. When Lukas tells them to prepare, so-to-speak, she (still wordless; still watchful: eyes a gleam [dark] of green smoke) takes her lethal war-form, Crinos, and a moment afterward, glows radiant. And that's how it is, and that's how it goes.

[Er! Manip+Subt! I don't show what I r thinking!]

[Wyrmbreaker] When they're all ready, Wyrmbreaker leads them up the hill.

At the crest, the world around them suddenly shifts. They find themselves suddenly facing a a tunnel, perhaps large enough for three Hispo abreast or two Crinos. If they look behind, the plains and the signposts are gone. Nothing but a dark basement there, and elevators. Ahead, the tunnel slopes sharply downward. Shrieks, chitters, snarls and growls waft up, along with a potent stink, a humid, suffocating heat.

"Let me take point," Wyrmbreaker growls softly. "Iona, Kate and Mila behind. Sinclair and Waking Dream on rearguard."

The tunnel descends precipitously for the first ten, fifteen feet, then gentles. They're still going down -- they can feel it in the way their claws have to dig in for traction -- but it's milder now.

The ground beneath them, once concrete, is now earth. Loamy. Faintly sticky, wet, and infirm. There is a blind curve ahead; they can see nothing past it, but all at once there is a shriek -- loud, and quite close --

and then a bane flits around the corner.

It resembles an enormous centipede: innumerable legs, ability to move seemingly impervious to gravity. It spirals up the wall and freezes when it sees them, as shocked to see them as they are to see it. More so, likely. When it raises its carapaced head, it reveals a human face -- a placid, lovely, youthful face, androgynous, with an insect's compound eyes.

It begins to shriek alarm.

[Wyrmbreaker] Later, when they watch what happened this night:

This is when Kemp shouts: "Shut it the fuck up and ward the Theurge!"

This is when Kemp and Iona step to the blind curve and wait for any backups that may arrive. This is when sklora-Myrgen and Soledad leap for the bane, and in four hits, bring it down before it can utter a sound.

[Wyrmbreaker] The bane hits the ground. A wing flutters weakly. Not a sound; nothing but the crack of teeth into chitin.

Yet another twist in the tunnel stretches ahead. Yet another run of downslope. The stench is growing ever stronger down here. The heat in the air builds: a thick, sluggish, wet heat, suffocating, like a Gulf coast summer.

A difference, though. Where it's been growing steadily darker, it now begins to brighten again. Not daylight, though, nor moonlight, nor lamplight.

A sickly, flickering, greenish-yellow glow bathes the next turn in the tunnel, where they can see that the tunnel begins to delta out. A room? A chamber?

Wyrmbreaker licks his chops. Then he raises his muzzle and scents the air.

Later, when they watch:

Kemp slinks forward, keeping to the shadows, all but vanishing -- an expert scout at work. In his wake, Iona: making all the motions of creeping. Visible to all. A Cliath scout at work.

[Warcry] A low whuff: "Same. Hear voices."

[Stormbreaker] Her muzzle lowered to the ground as she sniffed a bit further.. to try to confirm what she's found. Then.. quietly. "There's a sixth.. it just arrived.."

[Honor's Compass] "Voices. Wanting to hurry. Something squealing." Soft, whuffed.

[Banshee] Iona saw all this, remembered it. She was right behind Kemp/Lukas. "There be a wyrmhole ahead. Birthing out Banes everah 5 minutes. 2 Dancers and 3 banes already wait there fo' mo'. An' they will see us soon."

[Wyrmbreaker] Banshee doesn't get past There be a -- when Wyrmbreaker snaps his jaws at her.

"Silence! Tell us only what you can see and hear and scent, now. No prior memories. Let the others go in fresh, as you did tonight."

[Waking Dream] "Some ace in the hole down here," Waking Dream says, low-as-possible. "Reinforcements. Foul weapon. Dunno."

[Banshee] She chuffed a bit, but still, she guarded her Alpha/Assualt leader's back as she did just a few hours before. Listening, she heard something familiar, and that is where she moved a bit, where they would soon be seen.

[Wyrmbreaker] Wyrmbreaker's lips lift, quivering, in a reflexive and soundless snarl.

"We go in together. Stop at the mouth of the tunnel. Let me take the brunt of the attack as long as I can bear it. Counterattack what I do. Banshee," he pauses long enough to toss her his bag of talens, "take the Gaia's Breaths in there. Heal yourself, and then be ready to heal anyone. Do not Rage, do you understand?

"When you run out of spirit, shout it out and pass the talens on."

A short, chuffing breath. He waits until Banshee has repaired herself.

"Ready? With me!"

-- the Shadow Lord explodes forward down the tunnel.

[Lukas has like... 10 GBs or something. Banshee should heal herself up to full! I'll wait for a post from everyone, then get this rolling.]

[Wyrmbreaker] As they round the corner, they see it sprawling in the center of the chamber: a vortex of corruption, ten or fifteen feet across. Like an abominated mirror of Maelstrom, it's a swirling eye of chaos that spits taint out the way the way Maelstrom takes it in, devours it, ends it.

At the far side, there's barely two feet between the edges of the vortex and the sloping walls of the chamber. At the near side, there's perhaps four or five feet of clearance to the right, there's a largish patch of open space. Two malformed Crinos Garou stand there with long hooks, pulling banes from the filth as they're formed. Three other banes are already patrolling the edges, cavorting in the air over the hole. A fourth, the six entity Stormbreaker scented, is being birthed as the Ragabashes watch. It thrashes onto the shore, wet, slimed with the foul substance it was formed from, roaring. The Dancers keep their distance, use hooks to peel the afterbirth from its form.

As the Garou storm into sight, they turn to face the threat...

[PMs coming!]

[Wyrmbreaker] [Augh! That thing is bad! It's spitting out new banes!]
to Stormbreaker, Warcry

[Warcry] The Galliard of the Unbroken -- not the only Galliard here, not the Galliards brought as witnesses -- makes a rough sound in her throat when Lukas says he'll take the brunt of the attack. It's openly showing reservation, displeasure. There's submission though, sheathed fangs and lowered head. She knows none of them will die in this venture. She does not behave as though that is the case.

"I have many talens too. If needed."

She shakes her fur out, arches her back, stretches, and

follows Wyrmbreaker.

[Banshee] This wasn't right, this wasn't how it went. She caught the back in her mouth, and managed to get one out. But she did as told and broke it to try and heal herself. It was the last bit of spirit she had left.

[Wyrmbreaker] [Augh! That thing is bad! It's spitting out new banes!]

[Stormbreaker] The plan she agreed with, mostly. Staying together was important. Pick -them- off one by one.. and do not allow them to pick you off! The Cliath's experience with battle was.. minimal, but she could bullshit like no ones business and she looked badass.. and that was the important thing.

Stormbreaker followed after Wyrmbreaker, determined to stay close.

[Honor's Compass] There's a snarl.

She can't help it, when she catches sight of what they're about to confront but not really win against, since this battle was already fought, already won. But it doesn't make the sight any less revolting, doesn't make the fur bristle over her skin any less for the knowledge. She's whuffing as she moves, running low behind her Alpha, amongst the others, the ghosts of the former Garou that fought here, and those she's with in actuality.

"Vortex key. Must find way to close! Choke it with bodies! Banes. Feed back filth to filth."

[Banshee] Iona passed the bag back. Out o' Gnosis. Spoken in a soft High Tongue

[Wyrmbreaker] Later:

They'll see how the party before them did this. They'll see how Kemp and Iona scouted to the lip of the tunnel, the younger ragabash unaware that she was not cloaked in shadows.

They'll see how the Dancers saw them, and descended on Iona, and how the rest of the Garou rushed down the tunnel, and then the banes swarmed. And then:

Soledad and Kemp leap for the Dancers. Iona too. One manages to cut into Iona -- the same wound she bore when she reentered the basement's umbral reflection, the only one. Kemp takes another Dancer down in two hits, the first to fall. His body shoved into the Wyrmhole; the Wyrmhole shuddering, choking on its own foul emesis. Iona and Soledad have a little more difficulty with the remaining one, though eventually Soledad downs it with a vicious bite.

Of the four banes, one breaks for Kire, who stands his ground, takes the hits. His blood is the first to spill amongst the Gaians.

The other three go for Mama. She's kneeling, chanting, a ritual, a prayer, a summons. Kire stands over her, but is busy with his own enemy. Soledad and Iona do not defend her. sklora-Myrgen does, taking two hits, is wounded badly. The Fang deals damage back in kind, tearing into one of the banes.

Kemp takes four hits. The first two don't even scratch him. The third wounds him. The fourth kills him.

[Wyrmbreaker] Wyrmbreaker snarls, and passes the talens directly to Mila -- flinging the bag without so much as breaking his stride.

"Heal if you must. Do not Rage! Shout when you're out of spirit!"

The banes are facing them now, chittering: eager for blood. The Dancers are screaming at them in their foul tongue, lashing them on. The Wyrmhole: yawns wide.

"Kate, with me, on the vortex! Everyone else -- on Sinclair's target!"

[Wyrmbreaker] Attacking a Wyrmhole is a little like a surrealist nightmare.

Their teeth tear into nothingness, meet some amorphous, rubbery resistance. When Wyrmbreaker snaps his head to the side, he literally rips pieces and chunks of matter into existence. Jumbled, incomplete, tattered pieces of banes, an eye here, a deformed skull there, a claw, some glistening stretch of entrail: these things splat out against the shore, pulled lukewarm and half-formed from the vortex, are flung onto the walls and the floor of the chamber like a Jackson Pollack from hell.

[Wyrmbreaker] It's possible none of them, not even Lukas himself, has ever seen him so supernaturally resilient before. Four blows come to him and are turned all-but-effortlessly aside -- though the last, in spite of all his armor, all his strength, manages to gouge him down the side.

It heals in an instant. Bloody Bandage. Still: Fate. Luck. Fickle mistresses.

The Wyrmhole, meanwhile: ripped and rended, its contents literally torn from its surface, shrinking, drying up, only a fraction of its original size now.

[Wyrmbreaker] This is where the stories begin to diverge ever more sharply. In their realm:

Two seconds into the battle, they annihilate the wyrmhole. Shred it to pieces, fling its fetid contents all over the room, half-formed, malformed, deformed, in seconds. They turn on the banes, focusing their attacks, taking them down one, by one, by one.

Three seconds into the battle, there's one bane left. It's wounded. The other three are shreds. There's one dancer left. He's terrified.

The other dancer is a smear on the ground.

--

Later:

They'll see how the ones that came before them fared. Three seconds into that battle, Kemp died. He took one hit too many; he got unlucky. It slid past his armor and took him down hard. sklora-Myrgen, at that point, was badly wounded, defending Mama. Banshee bore wounds from a Dancer. Kire, from the one bane that had attacked him, and from a hit he had taken for Mama after Kemp's fall.

Meanwhile, both Dancers were down as well by that point. Two of the banes were wounded. A fresh one crawls from the pit. The new bane shrieks; directs the storm. All the banes swarm sklora-Myrgen, then, seeking to take the Fang down.

Four seconds into the battle, Soledad takes a bullet for her Alpha. She takes a lot of bullets for her Alpha. Five seconds, and she goes down dead; rages back up, mad-eyed. She, and sklora-Myrgen, and Kire, and Iona, fight for their lives. They take three banes down, and both the Dancers. Injure a fourth.

Six seconds into that battle: Mama Anklebiter completes her summon: a water elemental born into the world. At the same time: yet another bane crawls from the still-open Wyrmhole.

Six seconds into that battle, one injured bane and two fresh, more powerful banes face the Garou. Banshee is lightly injured, Kire more heavily, both sklora-Myrgen and Soledad badly wounded; the last literally one blow from death.

The Wyrmhole is still open.

[Wyrmbreaker] Four seconds into battle: the last bane goes down.
Five: the last Dancer.

The adrenaline of combat is pounding in their ears. It felt real. It felt so fucking real that they can taste blood, taste flesh, taste victory

and a bitterness rather like defeat. Because it didn't go this way.

It's not real. It felt real, but it's not. As soon as the last Dancer dies, the scene around them simply freezes, crystallizes. The Dancer stops falling, head snapped back, throat yawning open, arms pinwheeling, feet off the ground with the force of that last hit. The arcing splatter of his lifesblood hangs motionless in midair.

If they touch anything, anything at all -- the Dancer, the blood, the chaos -- the entire scene simply unravels. Dissipates to nothing. Fades away, leaving no trace but their memories, what they have seen and felt, the rage they spent, the gnosis, the talens they've used.

They're back on the plains, a moody, overcast sky overhead, sere grass beneath their bloody paws.

[Warcry] Then:
An Adren Rotagar went into the earth with a younger Ragabash, a Fostern Theurge, and three Ahrouns, two packed under a goddess of war and wisdom. One of them was walking wounded. Four of them were resurrected. One of them will, soon, burn on a pyre as though the destruction of the body and belongings will release a spirit already long, long gone.

Now:
A Fostern Ahroun went into the earth with a younger Ragabash, a Fostern Philodox, and three Galliards, one a Fostern and one packed under a god of thunder and dominance. One of them still bears her wounds from the first battle. Four are untouched. One was scratched, and his skin instantly absorbed and smoothed over the wound as though it never, ever was.

They stand at the edge of what was once a Wyrmhole, birthing out banes, but it has gone barren. They stand, while the bodies of two Dancers and three Banes rot (it happens very quickly, when it begins to happen at all) at their feet. Somewhere back in the tunnel are the splotches that used to be a sentry bane, many-eyed and shrieking.

It all fades. Unfurls. Dissolves.

Sinclair's ears twitch, and if there were more light coming through the clouds, the titanium through her ears and through the skin of her left foreleg would glint against it. As it is, the modifications that mark her to so many as urrah blend into the shadows of her fur. She chuffs out a breath. Bitterness, then. She looks over her shoulder, looks at the others, looks down.

Her anger is like a palpable, almost visible fire around her, lurching and saturating.

[Wyrmbreaker] And later:

Seven seconds. They banes swarm Soledad. Mama takes the hit; comes to the edge of death. Again: sklora-Myrgen, who dies, and comes back.

Eight seconds. Kire defends Soledad. Drops unconscious to the floor. Mama, bitterly wounded, heals Kire, heals Soledad, heals sklora-Myrgen, only to see them wounded again.

Nine seconds. Mama dies for Soledad ... and comes back.

Three Garou beyond reason. One dead. Kire nearly so; Iona still bearing her wound. Ten seconds. Kire dies for Mama, and comes back.

Eleven: they kill the last of the banes. And close the Wyrmhole.

[Banshee] Iona watched as the second battle went so much smoother, side by side with the original battle. End then end, the hispo lays down and huffs at the dirt. Her eyes go up to Lukas. Then they go to the others. She had fought, as hard as she could, given 110% of herself into this battle, and somehow been the only one to escape with little damage, and had not died and risen.

[Honor's Compass] Katherine's coat is still gleaming, much like Lila's, like Lukas' own. The silvery protection ebbs, fades. The gloaming light of Luna dissipates once she is clear that the danger has passed [for them], that this victory was theirs [but not]. The Silver Fang lets a low, steady breath out, and sits back on her haunches; her pale eyes gleaming in the dim light.

She looks over at her Alpha.
At her pack-sisters.
At the one who had shared the Reawakening of Spring with her.
To the near-stranger.

Then her ears fold back and she tips her head back; howls -- once. A lone, mournful farewell to those who had died here, and come back. And most importantly, the one who had not.

[Stormbreaker] Mila had no first hand knowledge of the previous events. She didn't know the honored warrior who'd lost his life. She didn't know the connections to him. The sorrow was palpable. Perhaps this isn't how this was envisioned to go. It was over.. so quick. Barely a scratch to any.

What was clear.. is where a mistake was made. Those who'd fought the battle for real failed to close the wyrmhole.. allowing their enemies to spawn and further divide their resources.

The dark wolf didn't look pleased that they'd just smeared the wyrm guts on the wall with one fell swoop.. she knew what this all meant.. and that those who grieved for the loss of their friend would not be aided by hearing of this..

Her gaze shifted towards Lila.. the howl went up - her muzzle rose and a mournful, haunting howl joined in.

[Waking Dream] Another day, and sorrow.

They fight: these - the Unbroken, the Galliard Elder of Maelstrom's Sept, Stormbreaker. They triumph. They witness the other fight: how it really happened. The battle: those claws, those garou. They can read their expressions -- blurred; it all happens in a matter of seconds. They can count each blow, if they're sharp-eyed, keen. They watch Truth in Frenzy fall. The resurrections. And, now

mere hours afterward

maybe dawn's inching its way into the sky, now: first dawn Kemp Oates'll never sleep through or notice

they're standing on withered grass, blood-soaked, remembering. Waking Dream looks pensive, and also sad. Honor's Compass lifts her voice to howl, then so does Stormbreaker, after a glance -- Lila listens for a moment, and then, to gather those voices together, to say goodbye, she, too, howls for the brave ones who resurrected themselves the day before Easter

and she howls, oh, howls for the one who just wasn't angry enough to come back

one more time.

And eventually, that's done, and she's looking at Lukas, Lila-woman again, quiet.

[Warcry] Kate howls. Then Mila. They give voice to sorrow and to mourning, for those that died. Lila joins them, saying goodbye.

When the Glass Walker among them throws her head back to howl, muzzle going from grass to moonlight, it is not to sing with them. She opens her maw in a roar, a loud and unleashed cry of undiminished rage, twisted in its rising with frustration, with what little grief she has for those she never knew, with what mourning she has for the nation, for the sept,

for this fucking war they're fucking losing

because of stupid, needless deaths.

When she finishes, she's shaking, sucking in air and claws spasming into the mud. She looks like she wants to kill something. It is one of the few times when it becomes stringently clear why she was given the name she was.

[Wyrmbreaker] A hispo's howl is far different from a wolf's. It is lower, rougher, more discordant. Wyrmbreaker's joins the chorus, slinging out across a barren landscape dotted with battlefields, dotted with signposts, dotted with memories of the glorious and the injustly fallen alike.

When they finish, Wyrmbreaker is Lukas again, crouching in the short wildgrass, wiping blood from his mouth only to see it fade to nothing on his hands, on the grass he wipes his hands on.

"You know what I think?" He's speaking to Lila, quiet. "I think most of them made mistakes of inexperience, and maybe just a little arrogance. I think they could have done things differently tactically, and they could have been more vigilant when defending each other, early on, but these were all rookie mistakes. Not really cowardice.

"I think they were brave as hell toward the end. The way they died for each other, over and over..."

The Shadow Lord frowns into the distance, then looks back at Lila; at Sinclair, and Kate. Rises, letting grass shards fall from his fingers.

"I want them to know what they did right as much as what they did wrong. So they can learn. Judging from what we saw here, I'd say they did learn by the end of that battle. But judging from how they reacted to me, it's like they forgot all over again. I think at this point the Fang and the Uktena are convinced I'm out to trample on their glory." A faint, ironic huff. "Because that's what Shadow Lords do, I suppose."

[Stormbreaker] Mila stood, herself again. Her expression was somber, thoughtful. She said nothing - she was the outsider here. If asked, she'd offer opinions, but in all honestly, she didn't think they were needed. Storm-colored eyes shifted between them all... and without a word, she simply stepped back, out of the way. She'd be there, should they like to speak to her - but silence for now, seemed appropriate.

[Warcry] "

[Waking Dream] Lukas is speaking to Lila, quiet. And she is listening to him. Lila is a good listener; he knows that well. Honor's Compass does, as well: after all, the galliard didn't look exhausted after her Fostern challenge, was still bright-eyed, enthusiastic, after all those words and arguments. So, she listens.

"I don't disagree, Wyrmbreaker-yuf." Now it's Lila who's looking out into the distance, as if she could see something there: some Other battle, some other tale of Glory. Her gaze flicks back after a second. "Do you think they tried their best?"

[Wyrmbreaker] The Shadow Lord takes a breath, chest expanding, falling.

"Not at first. Not all of them. I think some of them rode Truth in Frenzy-rhya's coattails a bit. I think there was an overall sense that it was under control, Kemp could handle whatever was thrown at him.

"After Kemp died -- yeah. They gave their all then. But fighting hard isn't the same as fighting smart."

[Waking Dream] This time, her not-disagreement is a flicker in her spring green eyes -- is not accompanied by verbiage or a nod. "What do you think you'll do? How do you think you'll teach them; make certain that they've learned their lesson?" A pause, and if he answers in that pause, she touches her mouth. She can still taste blood that isn't. She can still taste fetid flesh that is no longer. If he doesn't speak immediately, she'll continue: not because she doesn't want to hear that answer; but because she wants to add: "What I believe is this: when they reacted to you, it was because their wounds were still raw - " Here, a flick-of-eyes toward Iona: perhas the No Moon has wandered off, out of earshot, to contemplate her part in the battle, now that she's fought it twice-over. " - because this disaster and this triumph was so fresh; because the loss of Truth in Frenzy is like salt. What I'd like to believe is this: they've learned their lesson, those Ahrouns."

[Waking Dream] ooc: perhas = perhaps!

[Warcry] Off to the side, Sinclair eases to the ground, laying on her belly with her paws out in front of her and head up, watching the two Fosterns. Listening.

[Wyrmbreaker] "I asked you to come," Wyrmbreaker answers, which does not even seem like an answer at first, not until he says, "because if I was right, then I wanted to ask you to teach them. To go to them with what you might see here tonight. As a neutral witness. But I think at this point that would be unnecessarily cruel."

He thinks for a moment.

"I'll watch them. See if they've learned. And if they haven't, I'll teach them again."

[Warcry] Sinclair shifts. She changes back to her birth form in an instant, revealing herself in street clothes and tousled hair, in a crouch on the ground that she rises from with slow, athletic grace. When she speaks, she speaks quietly, and she speaks primarily to her Alpha.

"Truth in Frenzy-rhya told them to protect each other at the very beginning," she says. "I may have missed others, but when we watched the battle as it truly played out, I only saw one of the Ahrouns actually do so until the Adren died.

"Then Muerte Fria, Moving Mountain and sklora-Myrgen did. Even the Theurge." She turns her head and looks at Lukas for a moment. Whatever she's thinking there, it isn't hard to read. Lila, gifted as she is in such quarters, can probably read the other Galliard even more deeply, see not only what she's thinking but how she feels about it.

And since it is so very much on her sleeve, the unspoken:

Only our own packmate did not, even once, take a hit for another Garou.

"I agree with Waking Dream, Wyrmbreaker. I think the Ahrouns learned. And maybe that is why they were so defensive."

[Wyrmbreaker] Lukas isn't as convinced; this is evident. He isn't happy either; this, even more so. He reads what's in Warcry's eyes, and it's the same thing he's known since he heard the story from Mama's lips. The thought makes him uncomfortable; makes him twist his neck on his shoulders once as though he wanted to pop a joint.

He answers Sinclair, though, "I was taught that you don't learn unless you admit failure first. And like you said. They were so defensive."

And, after a pause: "But here's me admitting failure. Maybe I shouldn't have pointed it out quite so quickly, with the wound still so fresh."

[Waking Dream] Lila watches both of the Unbroken, although her attention is more strongly on Sinclair when the Glasswalker shifts into woman-shape and speaks, and she reads [hears (sees)] without comment what Sinclair wears on her sleeve. Sinclair -- glass; Sinclair -- heart: not the kind, candycoated Valentine's day heart. Something honest.

Lila inhales, once Lukas has spoken again. "Yes," she says, simply. And then: "If they haven't," learned, if he watches those ahrouns and sees nothing, sees no experience gained, no insight, if he sees only sullenness and refusal: "Then come to me and I will go to them."

Beat. And, "There will be a lot to do." It's clear that Lila's not talking about the ahrouns any longer. It's clear that Lila's talking about -- well, the Sept has lost an Adren, and one of the few garou who raised the caern. There will be a lot to do.

And life'll go on.

[Warcry] Sinclair's brow furrows faintly when Lukas answers her, tells her what he was taught. It clears a moment later, and she doesn't reply. That may be a discussion for another day. Or just a passing thought, unimportant enough that it doesn't bear voicing. She looks over her shoulder, at where Katherine and Iona and Mila have gone, before turning back to Lukas and Lila.

"I... can't even begin to think of what the Ragabash Elder challenge is going to look like," she says, exhaling.

[Waking Dream] ooc: CURSE YOU CHAT, not re-freshing on me.

[Wyrmbreaker] Briefly, and brilliant, Lukas's eyes meet Lila's. Eventually he nods. Offer: acceptance. "Thanks," he adds, and on that note, begins to walk. They turn their backs on the signpost that reads BASEMENT; the anonymous bubble of battle that they will visit, and Kemp's packmates, and perhaps no one ever again.

It's not Gettysburg, after all. It's not the Battle of the First Hive.

Life goes on.

The grass crunches under their feet. Always barren here, always wintry. War does not allow for much in the way of life and greenery. The Shadow Lord bows his head against the wind, listens to them speak of Ragabash Elder challenges, finds a wry laugh in himself.

"That'll be Hatchet's problem, not ours."

[Warcry] [YOU JERK]

[Waking Dream] [ooc: nooot gonna lie. (LMAO) Lila was gonna say the same thing! but less wryly, and more, "THAT'LL BE SO INTERESTING." should i punt out another post, or are y'all good with leaving there? server! being! so! bitchy! is all.]

[Warcry] [YOU GUYS ARE SUCH JERKS. *KRI*]

[Wyrmbreaker] [i want jess to type the wrap! *dies*]

[Waking Dream] [fiiiiine! *goes typity*]

[Waking Dream] Lila inhales when Sinclair mentions the Ragabash Elder challenge. It isn't sharp, although there's something of sharpness there; it's considering, it's agreement with something in that remark. That'll be Hatchet's problem, not ours, Lukas says, and Lila buries her fingers in her dawn-ripening hair, raking it away from her face. Maybe she's thinking about the Ragabashes who still remain. "It'll be difficult," she says, a pause: then also, "I'm certain he'll handle it well." Faith, see: shining, strong. And it will be interesting, she thinks: interesting to watch, even if all the challengers are ash and gravel.

And they re-join the others: Honor's Compass, Banshee, Stormbreaker. They begin to follow their compass homeward (back to maelstrom [who demands sacrifice (where there is no calm eye)]). Maybe by now news of Sandman's death has reached the caern as well. Another death, another oldtimer gone: oldgard's getting thin -- newgard's coming home

- it's been a record year for rainfall.

taking lonna home.

[Wyrmbreaker] Lukas has been here two or three times before, dropping Lila off after some ghostly encounter or other. He's not driving this time -- Danicka is -- but as they near Lila's home the Ahroun sits up in the back seat and gives quiet directions.

Right at the second stop sign. Left here. It's that house there.

When the car is parked, Lukas is out first, flipping the passenger's seat forward and climbing out. Three rather tall people -- or two rather tall people and a body -- make a tight fit in the back of a japanese sport coupe. Lukas doesn't take time to stretch his cramped joints, though. He turns and takes Lonna over from Theron, holds her while the Theurge climbs out, then hands her back.

Then he leans into the car briefly. "Are you staying in the car?" he asks.

Whether the answer is yes or no, Lukas shuts the passenger side door, follows Theron up the walk. The hour is quite late, or very very early, depending on definition. The street is quiet, and they can clearly hear Lila's doorbell ding-dong!ing inside.

[Danicka Musil] Danicka is not in shock. If she were in shock, she wouldn't be functional right now. Able to drive a car with two large, bloody, vomit-soaked Shadow Lords and the body of a woman she couldn't quite call a friend but could have, one day. She drives silently, mechanically, and when they get to Lila's, she only gets out of the car so that Lukas and Theron can get out of it with Lonna's body more easily.

Standing by the hood, she stares at the pristine paint job. And blinks when Lukas speaks to her. Taking a deep breath, she shakes her head, and goes with the trueborns to the door. A subdued beep-beep tells them that the Infiniti is locked behind them.

She has her coat on. It's buttoned up, hiding what viscera is on her blouse. She wiped her face off with a Wet One at a red light, but there are still smears of gore on her skin and in her hair. She hangs back, watching the street, mostly, just in case anyone drives by who might be interested in two men, one of whom is carrying a limp blonde woman.

[Theron Locke] Theron sits in silence in the back seat, his eyes almost boaring a hole into the headrest in front of him. An arm had been draped around Lonna Controlling her, protecting..her.. he winced inwardly at the reminder that he hadn't.

The car eventually comes to a stop and Lukas exits and offers to take Lonna for the moment. He watches as her body slips from his grasp as he guides her towards the Ahroun. Eventually sliding out of the car him as he positions himself, his arms filled with the Child of Gaia's body once more. Turning towards the apartment as he begins the slow walk. Not waiting for the communication between his Alpha and his mate.

Just standing and waiting nearby the door....the doorbell chiming the only sound.

[Doomsday] The night is a warm one. There is a puddle -- the water thick, black and too cold; it lies on the asphalt like an oracle's mirror, like a premonition of fog (of mist), and there is a woman's white hand reaching out. No. Nay, there isn't. That was just a reflection: Danicka's, maybe, or Lonna's. They needed to step around the puddle or risk chilling their ankles (is it bad luck to break a mirror if it's water?). Lila's door isn't visible from the street. Lila's door isn't even easily visible from the house her house squats behind.

The doorbell rings, dong, ong, and there's nothing but darkness in the yard, no flickering lamplight, just shadow. It's more than possible Lila isn't home. Garou don't keep normal hours, and the Child of Gaia could be almost anywhere in Chicago if she's not home and she's not at the Brotherhood of Thieves and she's not at the caern (check off the list).

But she is home. They aren't waiting long when the door opens, and the young woman (creature) opens the door, looking as if she's fresh-woken up. She doesn't lock the door. They didn't hear her unlock it. Why would she need to lock her door? She's dressed for going outside, so maybe she just came home, or maybe she just woke up: blonde hair, loose and gleaming, catching the radiance from within and haloing up; face, half-shadowed, because she's a back-lit thing, but see how it catches the green?

"Lukas," she says, smiling, "Hey. I was just," and then, Theron: his armful. Lila goes very still, and she opens the door wider. "In," she says.

[Wyrmbreaker] Even before Lila looks to what Theron's carrying, instinct tells her something's wrong. The Garou at her door are too grave, too silent, their eyes too dark. And they're bloody, too. Theron has lost his shirt. Lukas is down to underclothes and his coat. It's a dead giveaway: war. battle.

Bringing home the dead.

Lukas nods once in thanks -- hospitality and all. His hand touches Danicka's back lightly, ushering her in ahead of him. Then Lukas, then Theron with his pitiful burden.

Inside, Lukas looks at the couch first: that's where Lonna said she slept. Her den, now. Was.

[Danicka Musil] Miz Musil is still in pigtails. It's absurd, those low, straightened lengths at the base of her skull, resting on her shoulders. She looks pale, drawn, and exhausted. She has her hands in her coat pockets, hiding their shaking. She doesn't move until Lukas touches her back, and then she walks inside mutely, feet heavy.

[Doomsday] [A'ight. PERC+EMP: How are YOU?]

to Wyrmbreaker

[Wyrmbreaker] Lukas is feeling shocked: this is the first time anyone has died on his watch since time immemorial [i.e., as far back as Damon can remember *LOL* possibly since Lukas came to Chicago!]. Lukas is also feeling guilty. He's berating himself. And finally, Lukas feels really, really bad about bringing Lila's kinswoman home dead.
to Doomsday

[Theron Locke] Theron follows the other two inside the abode in silence. Being ever so careful with Lonna as he protects her head from hitting the doorway. He can't look at Lila, can't bare to bring his eyes too her... to witness her sadness and disappointment.

Lukas eyes the couch first and then Theron follows his gaze and for the first time since his arrival he speaks "Where should I put Lonna?" The kinswoman is still a mess after all, they would need to clean her up at some stage.

[Doomsday] The galliard shuts the door behind them. Her home is modest. Not poor, not battered, not how can you live. Just: modest. Lila doesn't have a lot of possessions and if she didn't live (den [warm]) here it would feel like an empty chamber, no bullet, no heartbeat, no possibility for anything at all. But she does live here, so: home; as home as anything ever is, when your life is as transient as Lila's has been. The couch looks like a pullout and there's an afghan folded up in one corner, a few pillows, stacked beside. A love sac, voluminous, and some items that don't belong to Lila. A shoe, Lonna's. Some guy's coat. It's a college girl's apartment, maybe. Rootless.

"The bed," she says. There's no kitchen in the guesthouse. There's a bathroom. The door to the bathroom is open; maybe one of them can see their own reflection (a ghost in the dark). The place is lit by a ceiling lamp, and the ceilings are higher than one would expect. Pretentions of elegance, maybe, once upon a time, of loftiness, of lofthood, of charging-more-to-stay-here.

Lila doesn't need to waste time wondering who Danicka is or even ask the kinswoman her name. Lila knows who Danicka is. Lila's seen a possibility of Danicka in a few years' time. Lila's seen the reality of Danicka's presence in Lukas' eyes, saw it the first time they ever met, when he spoke her name. She didn't look at the kinswoman when they were outside, but she does now. That Danicka didn't look like this one, though: controlled, exhausted, upset -- shellshocked. They all had that same look. And Lila looks at them all -- reads them, knows them; holds her breath, exhales.

"Through there." There isn't really a door. There's a curtain, some hanging beads, wooden (clack [hippy]). "Please sit," she says, more for Danicka and Lukas than for Theron, who she follows into the bedroom proper. From her body language, one would assume she doesn't expect -- doesn't want -- Lukas or Danicka to follow.

When that's done, when Theron's set her down, Lila will re-ghost from behind those beads [clack, clack, clack] and say, "What happened?"

If necessary, she'll have Theron by the elbow, will take him out of that room, so that he's standing beside her, not leaning over the body. That's not Lonna, people. Lonna's gone. Or she'll be home very soon! With a story. Or she went back to her apartment, and she's getting hassled by that Turk boy, and Lila's on her way over. Or maybe she's dancing. Either way: that's not Lonna, that's just a body.

[Theron Locke] Theron hears a single word "bed" and that is where he heads, placing the body down on the pull out. Fingers running through Lonna's hair as he moves stray hairs from her face, almost tenderly. A pillow placed under Lonna's head at least she would be at rest now, the pain over.

He eventually stands and lets his eyes cast over her , a gentle touch at his arm as a suggestion was made that it was now time to leave her. A sigh given as he turns and follows behind the Galliard.

Rejoining the other two as he moves beyond the beads, falling closed behind him acting as a curtain. Standing beside Lila, he remains silent and allows Lukas to answer her question. He didn't trust himself to speak of it at the moment.

[Wyrmbreaker] Lukas doesn't follow, and doesn't want to, himself. He looks around the guest house, with its once-upon-a-time dreams of elegance and expense, and then takes a seat as it is offered to him.

Perhaps Danicka sits too. Or maybe she doesn't. He doesn't force her, either way.

Then Lila is back, the bead curtain clacking in her wake. Lukas has shed his coat by then, which is folded into a small bundle atop the couch cushion beside him, lining-out to avoid staining the fabric or leather any more than his bloody clothes already do. Because that's what he is right now. Bloody. He's in his underclothes, a plain white t-shirt and charcoal grey boxer-briefs, and though the latter doesn't show blood very much the former has bloomed with bloodstains, blood and other viler fluids, seeping into the fabric from the inside-out.

Wyrmbreaker himself does not look wounded, sitting on the couch with his feet apart and his elbows on his knees, hunkered over. There's a patch of skin on his shoulder that looks new, but to have regenerated so quickly means he was never badly hurt at all. His face is a mask of blood, though, his mouth and jaw still smeared with it despite abortive attempts to clean himself up in the car.

Against that backdrop: dark hair, swarthy skin, red blood -- his eyes are arrestingly brilliant. They flick up to Lila as she asks the question they've been waiting for.

Lukas straightens a little. He tells the story softly, without fanfare, but with more brutal, honest detail than he would have given anyone other than the Galliard Elder of the Sept:

"We were at the Blue Chalk Cafe, Dani&+269;ka and I. Lonna came in and we invited her to sit with us. She mentioned she had just left Ezra's dubious care and come into yours. Theron arrived as well. It was just coincidence, all of us at the same time.

"There was a waitress. She brought us our coffee. She was ... sick. She started vomiting; soon she was bringing up blood. Then one of the waiters. The customers panicked. Most ran. Some began to vomit, too. Six in all. Meanwhile the waitress was convulsing, and then -- she peeled out of her skin and came for us.

"There were security cameras in the corners. We couldn't risk shapeshifting, using gifts or rage. Dani&+269;ka went to the office to deactivate them. Two of the creatures followed her. Two more attacked Theron and I. Lonna went to the front of the cafe -- to try to cover the windows, I think. It separated her from us. She was alone, and two of them came after her.

"By the time Dani&+269;ka got the cameras down, they had managed to pin her down. They were all over her. I couldn't get across the room in time, but the truth is even if I could have, I wouldn't have. At that point, Theron and I both ... chose" that, the damning word, "to stand our ground and finish the ones who were trying to get in the office.

"In that time, Lonna died.

"After that, we could shift freely, and Dani&+269;ka had her gun. The battle was over quickly. Dani&+269;ka made sure there was no trace left of the surveillance tapes online or offline while we set fire to the bodies and left the place to burn. We came here."

That's it, then.

[Danicka Musil] "That's not --"

She almost speaks, when Theron asks Lila where to put Lonna. But Danicka cuts herself off, quieting and moving to someplace to sit. Anywhere. Where Lila indicates. That will do. She sinks down on the couch slowly, sitting on the edge of the cushions and keeping her feet together, her back straight. There are flickers of the woman Lila saw in the underworld hiding deep inside the woman now sitting in her den, but they are not the same.

This woman is many things that the gatekeeper was not: she's bloodsplattered. She looks like she's maybe thirty, rather than mid-thirties edging towards forty. She's also weak. Lukas talks about her pulling a gun on fomori, obliterating surveillance, and it's nearly impossible to imagine her doing anything of the sort. She's moving when she's told to. She's not speaking. She's in here because she's afraid to be out in her car, alone, at night, in Bronzeville.

She's not able to make eye contact with any of them, and truth be told, she isn't even able to look at Lila. Her hands rest on her knees. She stares at the floor, and a few times, she closes her eyes as though to stave off the urge to weep, or maybe just

lie down.

Eventually she does, however, speak up: "Can I please... can I please go clean her up? She's covered in..."

Vomit. Blood. Taint.

[Doomsday] [Whoa! WP: Be Cool, Galliard Chick. Just Shitty Luck!]
Dice Rolled:[ 6 d10 ] 1, 4, 4, 4, 7, 10 (Success x 1 at target 6)

[Doomsday] Lila listens without interrupting. Behind her, what's left of Lonna (that's not) is on the bed. The bed was clean; looked unslept in. The corners were tucked, military style. Now, the covers are bloody, covered in whatever Lonna was covered in: just how bad is the kinswoman's body? Just how much of it is left? Just what happened? Lukas is telling her a story, and, as with all of the stories he's told her, it's not one that makes her happy.

In that time, Lonna died. That's what he says, and they can all see the galliard's control over her silence slip a little. They can feel the sudden boil of [simmer (moon)] Rage, that thing that makes her a monster, that uncomprehending, blind and alien fire that licks her bones into a monster's shape flare up, smolder all the way up her spine, touch her dreaming (no: awake) eyes. Lila's looking at Lukas as if she doesn't get it. Lila's looking at him with blank incomprehension -- for a second, at least -- because she doesn't get why the concern for some fucking Weaver toy means that her kin is dead.

Not just any kin. Kin who was so hurt. Kin who was always getting herself into trouble. Kin who was so damned eager to help that she: Kin who she'd just started to help, maybe. Help for real. That kin. The one who was always getting in trouble around Shadow Lords: now, look. Final trouble, and she's dead. Because of security cameras in a coffee shop.

Lila takes a deep breath: raw, ragged. "Okay," she says, then -- whatever else she was going to say goes up in smoke; her gaze snags on Danicka when the blonde woman speaks. "I'd be glad for your help," she says, simply. Then, to Wyrmbreaker and Eyes of the Oncoming Storm: "Thank you for bringing her here."

[Wyrmbreaker] On that note Lukas stands up, picks his coat up. No apologies, because right now there's a beast behind Lila's eyes, and animals don't understand things like sorry and wish I could have and wish she didn't.

Animals understand: mine. Animals understand: dead. And animals understand: you didn't help.

So Lukas pulls his coat back on. And he nods to Lila, which is as much apology or acknowledgment or goodbye as he's going to give.

To Danicka, though: "I'll wait for you outside."

[Danicka Musil] One of the times that Danicka closes her eyes is when Lila stares blankly at Lukas, her rage checked but risen, snarling behind those pretty, shining eyes and that cherubic face. The kinswoman -- the one still alive, the one that Is -- sways slightly when her eyelashes meet, exhaling. It's a subtle thing, but Lila sees the tail end of it, sees Danicka's eyes opening again, when she swings her head around and looks at Wyrmbreaker's mate,

the one they chose to protect instead of Lonna.

Speaking of choices, Danicka chooses to believe, straw-grasping, that Lila being grateful for her help doesn't mean that Lila will be helping. It's a very thin form of faith. She rises to her feet and immediately walks from living room to bathroom. There will be towels there. She can wet them. She can do something, get the worst of it off of Lonna, even if she can't pick her up and set her in a bathtub.

Water runs in the sink. Cupboards open and close. And the beads clack as Danicka goes from one room to the other, going to perform the last possible corporal act of mercy.

[Theron Locke] Theron had been standing at Lila's side and had felt her rage starting to boil as Lukas spoke. He is silent as as he waits and listens as he fury builds. Who could blame her really, they had failed to protect her and now she was dead being delivered in the middle of the night.

Lila address him and it's all he can do to reply with a "It's the least I could do...." the statement drifting off into silence once more. None of his words were going to help now, so he was keeping his mouth shut.

Beginning to move after his Alpha. it seemed he was no longer wanted here. He'd had the opportunity to say goodbye, now it was time to allow others to do the same. "Lila, there are others that would want to know. Do you want me to contact those I know about, or would you prefer I leave that to you?"

Standing by Lukas' side as he awaits a response. Watching as Danicka begins to gather the things she requires to clean up Lonna.

[Theron Locke] (( Just a warning guys I may need to leave soon ))
to Danicka Musil, Doomsday, Wyrmbreaker

[Doomsday] Theron says, it's the least I could do, and Lila's an eloquent creature. Her expression says: really, those're the words you want to use right now.

"I'll contact people," she tells him, because he is interested, because he is asking, because he is concerned. Lila shifts her weight from one foot to another, no longer still, like she just wants to move. She'd tracked Lukas back to the door with her eyes, hadn't expected any more've an apology than that scant nod (she knows, she knows, it's just: it just happened) and now she wanted to get out've her skin: that'll have to wait. "But I'd really appreciate some help."

Pause. "I haven't been here very long; I don't know everyone Lonna knew. Gina," she says, "And Edwin, and ... once family stuff is straightened out, where she's going into the ground, or ... There'll be a memory service. Memory, anyway," Lila blinks, once, bright.

Then -- and Danicka's straw-grasping, revealed for the futile gesture it is -- she goes to help clean Unicorn's own Lonna Larson up and ready her for the grave.

[Danicka Musil] Again the beads clack, and Danicka's head comes up like a deer's -- an animal in the woods who has heard a twig snap. She's perfectly still for a moment, her hand poised with a wet, scrunched-up towel in one hand. There's blood on it, bile, thick and blackening, all of it. She's wiping Lonna's hair clean, kneeling on the bed next to her, and now

she's staring at Lila, motionless, and there's no doubt that right now fight isn't an option.

[Theron Locke] Theron looks towards Lila's expression and blanches a little, eyes lowering after a few moments. Knowing that he should have kept his mouth shut. Careless...

"Okay... I can help you to some degree as well. I'll let you know names and details or just direct them to you. If you need any help with organising the service please let me know. One thing you might like to know, she loves flowers. Natives in particular... she tended a garden.." And with that Theron starts to choke up on a memory, turning away as he takes a breath.

[Wyrmbreaker] Outside, Lukas is quiet, and tense. His back is to the door, his arms folded as much for warmth as out of habit. He turns slightly, swiveling at the hips as Theron emerges. His eyes glimmer, catching and throwing back what light there is, before he turns forward again.

Silently, he stands there waiting.

[don't wait for me from here on out!]

[Doomsday] Lila has wanted to meet Danicka since Lukas first said her name. This is not how she envisioned meeting her. Lila's gaze touches the deer-startled stillness of the (living) kinswoman, and she reaches up, tucking a lock of her hair behind one ear. The hair tangles, gold as an elm leaf about to fall, as gold as fairy coin, and she blinks again. "Hi," she says, and then: "This won't work. I'm going to take her clothes off."

She's telling Danicka this like Danicka doesn't know, like she can't see. Because that's just what the (i belong to the poet's moon) not-woman does: peels off Lonna's shirt, unbuttons whatever buttons are there to button, as if the shirt's going to ever be used again (as if she doesn't want to find blood-soaked buttons on the floor). Lila, human-shaped, isn't very strong, so she'll ask for Danicka's help holding Lonna once -- maybe twice. Just: get those filthy rags off'a her, right? Lila handles the dead woman carefully, and with respect.

Lila tries to handle the living woman the same way, because it's not her fault.

[Theron Locke] Theron turns back to see Lila already moving to assist Danicka, he just lets out a sigh and leaves the building. Foot steps padding over the ground as he moves to stand besides Lukas , joining him in silence.

[Theron Locke] okay guys I'm dreadfully late for an appointment.. I need to head off. If someone has grabbed a transcript I'll take a read later
to Danicka Musil, Doomsday, Wyrmbreaker

[Danicka Musil] As Lila moves further into the room, Danicka remains frozen. Her chest is moving under her coat with deep breaths that she still tries to keep silent, tries not to show. There is something archaic, ancient about this, that echoes the very fact that Lila so recently went to the underworld. In several cultures, preparing the dead to be buried was the work of women. In some places, it still is. Among the Garou, however, they take care of their own. Burn or bury them, float them out to see, do whatever their tribal culture dictates.

Lonna's not Garou, though. Nor is she a Shadow Lord. All Danicka knows is: her body is a mess. And they can't leave it like that. It may be sorrow, grief, mourning. It may just be simple practicality.

In any case: she doesn't simply bend her head and go back to work when Lila comes in, tender towards the corpse and helpful to the Galliard. Her lips together, her nostrils flaring, Danicka slides backward off the bed, feet touching the carpet, backing away from the Child of Gaia before she quite knows what she's doing. As soon as she does:

she stops.

The look on her face is vaguely apologetic. She takes a ragged breath, her pupils tightly constricted despite the fact that the room isn't very bright, and goes to work on Lonna's shoes as Lila works on her shirt. That's how they have to do this: Danicka flinching every time Lila speaks to her, eyes downcast and body kept facing the Galliard as much as possible, as though she can't bear the thought of having even a gentle wolf at her back.

She keeps her distance. But she stays. And she cleans Lonna with a striking lack of hesitance, washing her breasts and her navel and making sure there's nothing that's seeped between her legs. She wipes her arms and her thighs and her knees and cleans under her fingernails. It takes time. It takes more time, because she's so terrified of Lila she can't speak.

Maybe she wouldn't speak, anyway. They are performing something of a sacred act, after all.

[Wyrmbreaker] Lonna's clothes are soaked. In blood. In the dark, thick vomit of the creatures that did this. The shirt is clammy and damp, ragged in places, and if they aren't careful it'll tear. Lonna's pretty blonde hair is matted, stuck together.

Lonna's eyes are half-open. She's turning cold, turning stiff, and there's no light in those eyes.

Lonna's not here anymore.

Her body is, though. The evidence of what happened to her is. And it's pitiful. Rageful. It wasn't a single unlucky hit that did her in; it's at least two. Two bites. Not great ruinous gashes, the sort werewolves and carnivores leave, but ragged, torn-edged wounds that were as much ripped and chewed open as they were sliced.

Also, bruises, contusions, imprints from where she was held. Scratches, where their nails, because somehow even without skins the things that held her had fingernails, had gouged her.

All these tell Lila: she did not die easily. And they tell Lila: she did die struggling. Resisting. Clinging to life.

[Doomsday] If Lonna wasn't dead --

but she is

-- from what Lila knows of her, she'd know this: the kinfolk wouldn't be comfortable with the way Danicka flinched and would've probably flinched herself. From what Lila knows of Lonna she pulls this: the kinfolk would've tried to make this grim (grave) task as easy, as tranquil as possible; she'd care, she'd want people to feel better, and they just aren't going to feel better. That's what Lila knows, and possibly even part of what Lila thinks about when she washes what she can out've the wounds, pauses for a moment, bare-knuckles against a cut, because she could just touch her, and --

No. Lonna's dead. There's nothing to heal. There's nothing to mend.

Danicka's terror, the way she flinches from Lila, would usually be enough to cause Lila to back-away, to talk-more, to do to do something, calm, but she not now. Her concession is a quiet, speaking only when necessary, Do this, Could you, Thank you, Will you, okay.

When Lonna's as clean as she'll get [baptism (cleansing)], washed so she's just raw and pale and wax, Death's wick unlit, Lila wads up the bloodied, vomit-streaked towels, the mess and the mulch of it, and she goes to dump it in a corner of the bathroom with some of Lonna's make-up (god knows Lila rarely bothered) on the counter still, and the truth is this: she's blank, again. Paper-blank, because now, now she'll need to make human arrangements, now she'll need to call -- maybe some've Hill House's kin -- hell, maybe Izzy or that Slaughter woman -- just to get the body burned (or ready for burial).

"Thank you," she says, again, when she comes back. And then, gentle: "You should go and get cleaned up yourself now."

[Danicka Musil] Lila gathers up the towels. Danicka stays with what is left of Lonna. Truth be told, that isn't much: a corpse too far gone to even have useful organs and tissue to donate, and she thinks Lonna would have wanted that, probably, but she doesn't really know.

Danicka is sitting on the bed with the body when Lila comes back in to tell her Thank you. Simply put, she starts to cry. It took a world out of her, being in here with a Galliard in this state. Cleaning a dead body ravaged by fomori. Danicka has not been this drained in months, or maybe she just blocks it out when she's this exhausted. She ducks her head as the tears well up and come out, fighting them like some adolescent boys do, choking them down, struggling.

"I'm sorry," she says, and it's breathed, and it's all she says. I'm sorry Lonna's dead. I'm sorry I didn't realize it. I'm sorry they didn't keep both of us safe. I'm sorry they chose me.

Except: not that last.

Danicka is not sorry to be alive, and Lonna dead. She doesn't say so. But still: she's sorry. For something. Maybe she's sorry for crying in Lila's bedroom.

Rising off the bed, she edges towards the door. Has to edge, the two of them moving at opposite ends of a pole, orbiting, because Danicka can't push past her or even go near the door while Lila's standing there. There's nothing more to say. This was how they were introduced, Wyrmbreaker's mate and Waking Dream. So be it.

She closes the door quietly behind her when she leaves the place, as though someone is sleeping inside. And Lukas is waiting for her.

[Wyrmbreaker] For a long time, Lukas and Theron simply stand there. They face the street. They don't speak.

Eventually, Lukas turns to his packmate and says, "You should go back to the Brotherhood. Let Edwin know. Gina. Whoever else you might think of. I'll wait here until they're done."

So the Theurge departs. In wolf-form, and in the velvet shadow of the moon, because they only have one car and it belongs to Danicka.

Lukas stays.

The night turns on. The women work inside, and Lukas waits. Cold and passing time turns the blood on his skin tacky, turns it sticky, turns it stiff and dry finally. He shivers for a while, but then he doesn't really feel the cold anymore. His ancestors stood sentry on mountaintops, cliffsides; fought vampires and wyrms on the snowy, thunderwracked peaks.

He can stand vigil for an hour.

Eventually Danicka emerges. Lukas looks at her: intent, intense. Then he looks at Lila, nods to his fellow Elder, the Garou that fate has thrown him together with some three or four times now.

The Shadow Lords depart together. The Garou and the living kin, the one they chose to protect. His arm comes around her shoulders before they're even halfway down the walk.

[Doomsday] [Thanks for the RP!]

[Wyrmbreaker] [should be noted: Lila specifically instructed Theron NOT to notify people, so Theron should probably respect that ICly *dies* but Lukas doesn't know that!]

[Danicka Musil] [That was a great scene, guys. Thank you!]

[Theron Locke] (( Yep all good I got that.. and THeron will respect that ))
to Danicka Musil, Doomsday, Wyrmbreaker

[Wyrmbreaker] He hugs her to his side. Even now, even after all that time in the cold, he's intensely warm. Danicka gives him the keys. He drives without question: not north but south, toward their den.

She begins to cry. He looks at her, his heart twisting in his chest, but he says nothing. After a while his hand comes to her leg, covers her thigh, her knee. She cries, and she cries, and he keeps his hand on her body until sobs become sniffles and sniffles quiet to a shellshocked nothing.

Lukas feels shock, himself. He cannot remember the last time someone died on his watch. Lukas feels something very much like guilt, something gnawing and biting at his viscerae,

though perhaps not for the reasons one might expect.

Because while Danicka tended the body, Lukas stood outside and thought about it, walked through the battle one second at a time, considered each strike, each blow, each hit, each instant. Considered the options, the outcome. Considered everything, and decided --

(here's another cold truth, then:)

Decided, even knowing what he does now -- that Lonna would die and Danicka was perhaps never really even in danger -- that if he were given the opportunity to go back and make that choice again,

he would choose exactly as he did. He would sacrifice Lila's kin to protect his mate.

And he's not sorry he did that. He's not sorry he chose that, and would choose it again in a heartbeat.

If there's guilt -- and there is -- it's not because he didn't save Lonna, or even because he wouldn't change the way he chose. If there's guilt, it's only because:

he's not even sorry. Not one bit. And because: he's selfish after all.

This is not something he tells Danicka. Not right now. It's all he can think of though. So the trip to Stickney is silent, is long, is finally over when they pull into their garage, and the doors close, and Lukas gets out and comes around to the passenger's side where Danicka is climbing out.

They go inside, then,

and go upstairs without a word,

and turn on the water in the bath,

and he helps her strip out of her clothes before shedding his own,

and then they get in the shower and stand under the spray and wash and wash until the water at their feet is not red, not pink, but clear again.

Danicka cries again. It breaks his heart, so he holds her in the steam and the water and the hot, cleansing warmth, and he murmurs shh, shh and i'm here, i'm here and holds her curled to his chest and rocks her until she's quiet again, quiet and drained and clean and warm and

alive.

He holds her that night, while they sleep. He stays awake long after she's asleep in his arms, and he feels guilty again, briefly, stabbingly, there and then gone. When it's past all he feels is gladness, and gratitude: because he's glad Danicka is alive. Because he's glad his honor was not stronger than his love. Because he's glad, even, that he can hold her tonight. That all that remains of his rage is a tiny flickering pilot-light, afterburner blue like his eyes; that his mind is a vast glassy calm; that the night is silent and still, and their den is dark and warm, and

he still has her.

She's still alive.

the gate of volition.

[descent.] "Once upon a time, spring would not come without the rite," says their guide quietly, and with her words, flecks of snow begin drifting down onto their heads. A fog rolls in at the edges of their vision, obscuring what they can see beyond where they stand now. Soon, everything feels and looks empty.

"But that was long ago, before the urges of the world were set into patterns by the Weaver. The Wyld wanted life. The Wyrm demanded sacrifice. The Weaver took both and made it ritual."

This is all Harvest's Dread says, the snow turning her hair white, the dimming light shadowing her features with the wrinkles of deep middle age. It happens more quickly than any of her other transitions, but she does not quite become the ancient Elder they saw at the beginning, at Blood Summons's gate.

She starts to walk, and reaches into her bandolier for the largest, heaviest, final bell. She does not ring it yet, but they walk. Into the fog. Into the rising snow of deep winter. They huddle together, pack to pack, wolf to wolf, until their steps sink into the whiteness all around them. Finally, Harvest's Dread, Wasted Winter removes the bell that secretly she knows is called

The Sorrowful

and rings out a low, reverbating B note.

The fog rolls away a little bit, and they find themselves at a door to a house they've never seen before. On a neighborhood street they aren't familiar with. There's a car in the driveway they don't recognize, lights on inside, the promise of warmth.

Wasted Winter, or the Garou who is becoming her, puts her bell away.

[Wyrmbreaker] This time, Lukas doesn't hesitate, doesn't look amongst them to see who recognizes the gate.

He doesn't recognize the house, or the car, or any of it -- any more than any of them do. What he does recognize, if only obliquely and distantly, is that promise of warmth. Or maybe even that's imaginary. Maybe all he really recognizes:

is that this is the seventh gate. And it's his.

The Ahroun's hands open and close, stretching as though he were preparing for battle. Then he steps forward, a little ahead of the rest, and goes to the door. If it doesn't open for him, he reaches for the knob. Only if it's locked does he knock at all.

[Waking Dream] The Wyld wanted life.
The Wyrm demanded sacrifice.
The Weaver took both and made it ritual.

The words touch her, and she looks as though they do; she looked touched (fey), as if those words, that ritual, this ritual, struck a chord on her wishbone and it reverbated up to the expression in her wide-eyed and unblinking glance. Her breath hitches, again. Maybe because she's tired. She didn't have time to drowse when she was teaching the cubs, and she didn't drowse, later, while they waited out the storm in the pit, and now, now her eyes are limned in brightness when her gaze tracks from the old woman (wasting [withering] before their eyes) who is so much older than old to Lukas, Lukas' back, between Lukas' shoulderblades when he tries the door. And Kate must be damned cold by now, so she stays close to the Silver Fang, offering her warmth as necessary.

[descent.] The door doesn't open the moment Lukas steps forward. It does, however, give when he turns the knob, and heat rushes out at them. Light. Smells of cooking food. Nothing special occasion, just... hearty winter fare. Maybe some kind of pot pie, who knows.

"Taťka!"

Not a single voice. A chorus. And a yell from a throat too young to do anything but make noise. A pair of socked feet pound towards the door and as soon as it's open a very small person who can't be more than five, probably more like four, jumps onto Lukas as though she expects to be caught and held onto. And it is a she, the oldest She, legs long and skinny and arms stronger than they look. Her hair is dark. They can't get a glimpse of her eyes, because she's snarling and play-biting at Wyrmbreaker's jaw and neck, razzling him like a pup might do with another dog.

[descent.] His mind aches with the name: Klára. And they call her: Klárinka.
to Wyrmbreaker

[Wyrmbreaker] What sort of test did they expect Lukas, so upright, with armor so unchinked, to face? Futile death, perhaps, or the unwinnable battle: nightmares, both, of an Ahroun.

What they get is a house full of warmth. Full of smells of food, comfort, home. Full of children running to greet him at the door.

At the door, hand on the handle, the Ahroun's shoulders suddenly sag. Oh, no, he thinks, which is all the respite and preparation he allows himself before he sweeps the door open, and there's the girl, dark-haired and clear-eyed like her father, and she's jumping as though she expects to be caught:

which, of course, he does. Without hesitation or hitch. Catches her, Lukas does, and sweeps her up effortlessly into a bear hug, swaying from side to side, kissing her cheek.

"Klárinka, princess. Hi." He shifts her to his hip, which feels natural to him though he can't remember the last time he held a child, and turns to the rest of his tonight-pack. They can't quite read his eyes -- a happiness like pain, a sorrow like helplessness -- but he waves them in, smiling. "These are daddy's friends, baby."

[Truth's Meridian] There does come a point where you simply cannot get any colder; any more chilled to the bone than you are. Katherine has passed this point, so while she still shivers, and feels the cold through her bare feet, she does not complain of it. Rather, she simply follows quietly with the others who have survived their gates.

When they reach that door, and it's opened and the child rushes out; something catches in Katherine's throat; she is revealed to be smiling, to be staring at her pack-mate in just such a way as she has never before; as if she had never seen this side of the Ahroun before. And in truth, she has not.

these are daddy's friends

One of which has no pants on, and looks like she was just birthed from the earth itself. Katherine waves, it's absurd.

[Waking Dream] "Hi there," she says, low-voiced and pleasant. But she has looked, thoughtfully, at Lukas Wyrmbreaker who earlier confessed he never even uses his last name. And that thoughtfulness stays in her expression, even though she smiles at the little girl.

[Rain of Brass Petals] He's so happy.

Genuinely. She didn't know him that well, but... some part of her wanted to believe that this really was real. She knew it was a test, she knew it was some kind of trial, she knew there was some kind of catch here, that this could not stay. She tries not to think about it, or at least for too long. The Fury smiles, and she gives the little girl a wave. All brightness and something content.

[Truth's Meridian] After a moment's consideration -- and a glance at her current state -- the Half Moon slides behind the cover of the two female Garou; passes Adam back her shirt and shifts down into a snowy [dirty] white wolf. She whuffs, and her head pokes around; tongue lolling out as if to say: there, better?

At least her teeth don't chatter in this form.

[Rain of Brass Petals] And her shirt goes right back on.

[descent.] She's quite big to be carried like that, Klara is. Too old, definitely, but her weight's nothing to him. She swings around to his side, legs dangling, as though they do this every day. She has her arms around his shoulders, one cupped over the other, peering past his nose at the seven of them. Kate waves. Klara lifts a hand and waves back.

It isn't just the kindergarten-aged girl. It's the three year old boy -- wearing glasses, with hair as bright gold as his mother's and eyes as bright blue as his father's -- over near the stairs, half-hiding from his own father, staring at the mass of Garou at the door. And yes: the baby, whose highchair is positioned between the living room and the kitchen, and she is banging on the tray table while she kicks her pudgy legs and yells at the top of her lungs as though to say Pay attention to me, goddammit! I see you over there! Don't think I don't!

And it's Danicka, coming out of said kitchen, wearing a white jacket over whatever sweater she has on underneath. Her cheeks are flushed. Like Klara, she's a bit chilled, as though they just got inside themselves. She's drying her hands on a towel, and when she sees him -- and everyone else -- she pauses. Then, after a beat, picks up a second later:

"Alright, come inside," Danicka says to the lot of them, "You're letting my children's college fund out the front door, thank you."

None of them -- even Lukas -- knows her as this firm. This unafraid. She beckons them all in, walking forward. The baby in the chair stops yelling and gives a whine, a plea, reaching upward. Danicka pauses and murmurs softly to her, reassuring as she unlocks the tray and picks up the baby, as though they're not all there watching: "Shhh, shh. Nebuďte smutná. Jsem tady. Táta je doma. Nikdo se na vás zapomněli, buclatý dítě.

Like Lukas, she puts her child on her hip. Like the girl, the baby wraps around her parent, watches the newcomers past her chin. They close the door, hustle inside -- or stay outside, if they do, and if so Danicka doesn't argue. She just heads over to them. Kate becomes a wolf and the boy on the stairs cries out, jerking his legs back as though she's going to bite him. Danicka frowns, halting in the middle of the room. "Kate, don't. Just... go upstairs and get cleaned up. You can borrow some of my things. Petříček, it's okay. It's just Katherine."

She comes to Lukas, and stands on her toes, kisses his cheek when he bends to her, as though she knows he will. Klara makes a face. Danicka rubs the baby's back, since the baby -- who wanted so badly to see her papa -- is now shying from him, curling into Danicka's chest. "I don't even want to know," she says blithely, about the mud and the eight Garou suddenly in their living room. "So don't tell me. Just show them where the towels and things are and then get back down here, the mixer broke and the potatoes just finished boiling."

[Wyrmbreaker] Something sank its claws into him when Lukas heard children running, a chorus of Daddy!s. Something plunged a knife into him, and it twists now when he sees the boy

(his son)

flinching from the wolf; when he feels the baby shying away when she's brought close to him.

The girl on his hip feels natural. This house, though he's never seen it before, feels familiar. All his children feel familiar to him, recognized, as though they were his and always were, always have been, always will be. Strangely, though, the Danicka that approaches, the Danicka that looks and smells and feels and sounds and moves just like Danicka, but not quite like the Danicka he knows -- that alone gives him a moment's pause.

He hesitates a second before he bends to receive the kiss to his cheek. He does not turn to catch it on his lips, though when her lips touch his skin and feel just the way he remembers, his eyes close.

Ow, he thinks.

And: What do you really want of me?

Keeper of the seventh gate.

He lets the girl down when he straightens. The girl, Klárinka, his eldest and firstborn daughter, whom the seers would name a Galliard. Then he laughs -- a little self-conscious, a little abashed, turns to the rest of the Garou.

"Come on. Follow me. Let's get cleaned up for dinner."

He leads them up the stairs. He does not falter. He finds he knows the house as he explores it; does not have to hunt for lightswitches or doors, bedrooms, bathrooms.

[Truth's Meridian] Katherine as a wolf brushes against her Alpha's side when they go up the stairs; she pads on light paws, leaving a little scattered trail of prints in her wake. She looks up at Lukas, and tilts her head to one side; inquiring. She pushes against his hand at one point and licks it in some universal sign of reassurance -- probably when he leads her to clothing and wash-cloths, if we're honest.

When she's cleaned her face as much as she can; and wiped away as much of the grime as possible and borrowed a pair of tennis shoes from not-quite-Danicka's closet and run a comb or her fingers through her hair -- she emerges from the upstairs and stands at the top of the stairs, unsure. Her own challenge was done, but it had not involved the sacrifice of what could be for what must be. Her gate had been about facing it alone -- but this is no longer her gate.

She wonders if she should, if any of them should, go down-stairs.
But in the end, she cannot abandon him to this alone.

[Waking Dream] The fostern philodox is joined by the fostern galliard. The rest are, no doubt, milling about whatever rooms they were shown to -- maybe leaning, no! That's rude! NOT leaning! against a wall. Lila looks, for a long, long, long moment at Naomi, trying to coax from her some signal, some sign, and touches Kate's elbow, briefly: "Maybe we should give him a little time. Before we go down. I don't know what this means to him, but I suspect he needs, at least for a little while, to face it. He knows we're here. And so does his -- that -- family." A brief pause. "Was that blonde woman Danicka?"

[Truth's Meridian] "Yes," Katherine replies with softly, her voice still scratchy-worn from her own adventures earlier. "That is - was - Danicka, but not as I know her." A beat. "At least, not yet."

[descent.] There are things he knows that he cannot know, things he knows by heart: the layout of this house that he's never seen before. Where the towels are, where the guest bedroom is, where Danicka keeps extra clothes, where the robes are for those who can find nothing else. He knows the names of these children he's never seen before, knows their nicknames, knows that Danicka never sang Spi mladenets over Petr, but she would sing Hajej, můj andílku to all three of them, revealed a knowledge of a wealth of lullabyes over the years, which wasn't surprising.

He knows in his mind that this is not Danicka, that it cannot be his mate, though she smells and feels exactly like her. Cruel trick, universe. Cruel trick, umbra. Cruel trick --

Wasted Winter, aging before their eyes, catches his gaze when they're upstairs being directed to places to wash, things to put on. She looks apologetic. Almost. Maybe she's just sad. Pats his arm as she passes by, while Klara -- the only one of the children who doesn't seem afraid of him or Katherine, but seems wary of all the others -- tells him about their day. She follows him around, up and down the stairs, up and down the hallway, skating in her socks on the hardwood, getting underfoot, chattering nonstop.

They went ice skating. And they went shopping. And she got new shoes. And Petr ate too many koláče last night and he threw up and Zlata cried because she thought he was dying or something I don't know, babies are kind of stupid. They couldn't find her favorite gloves today the pink ones you know the pink ones, taťka, with the green stripes and the white dots the ones with the sparklies taťka you're not listening we couldn't find my gloves so I had to wear the purple ones and they're not as good because the sparkles help keep her fingers warm you can tell cuz the way they glint when the light hits them. But her hands stayed warm anyway while they went skating and they had to go skating because maminka promised they'd go skating soon as it got cold enough and now it's cold enough --

"Lukáš!" calls Danicka, calls not-Danicka, calls the gatekeeper, from downstairs. He has to keep reminding himself it isn't her. He has to keep reminding himself that isn't his mate, though every fucking fiber of his being tells him this is his den, this is his mate. Instinct is roaring in his ears, clawing at his heart, tearing him open as though he is not strong enough as he is to survive what he feels, so he has to be opened up and made new. Made stronger.

His heart is telling him that what he feels for these children is completely different, no less deep, than what he feels for Danicka. He would die for them. If they were hurt, if they were threatened, if they were sad, he would slaughter wholesale whatever he could to make them safe again. If they failed, if they wept when they should let out a battlecry, if they were weak, if they fell to the Wyrm, he would bare his throat to keep them from harm, all the same.

There is his heart. Walking down the stairs away from him, and her socks are slippery and the hardwood is too but she's not holding the railing and she's going so fast and the words are boiling behind his lips, begging to be said the way he's certain he's said them a thousand times a day by now:

Klárinka, zpomalit!

There is his heart, sitting on the couch now, putting together a small set of Legos and the tiny pieces keep skittering down towards the cracks between the seat cushions, and he can't remember how many times he's had to bite back a surge of frustration, even rage, when he's stepped on a toy in the dark and it's stabbed him in the sole of the foot and

-- he remembers Danicka's hand on his arm and her eyes on his eyes once, shaking her head, one child's face buried in her stomach, her hand protectively on their back, and her mouthing Stop it at him, pleading with her eyes: Stop. You have to stop. --

there's his heart, quirking up, glasses sliding halfway down his nose only to be pushed up again like they are a thousand times a day.

"Lukáš," Danicka is saying, coming out of the kitchen again, still holding Zlata and carrying her towards him. "Here. God. Please. She won't go back in the chair and she won't let me put her down. Taaake herrr," Danicka says, all but shoving the wriggling baby at his chest.

[Wyrmbreaker] This is beyond cruel.

He can't meet Wasted Winter's eyes when she touches his arm. He doesn't see the apology in her eyes, and he doesn't want to, because it's not fair, they can't put him last, they can't ask this of him. It's not fair and

it never was. Because she might never go home again. And he can never go home to this.

Or -- maybe he doesn't look at her simply because she'll remind him of that. She'll remind him that this isn't real, none of it is real, the Danicka downstairs is not his Danicka and these are not his children. That is not his daughter chattering at him nonstop, and oh god she talks about last night, and yesterday, and it's like she has a real life, an existence beyond this one night, this one hour he'll spend here.

He finds himself saying things like:

I know, princess, sparklies totally keep your fingers warmer.
and
We'll look for them together, okay?
and
When I was a little bigger than Petr, I ate too many koláče and threw up and your maminka cried too, did you know?

and when she goes skidding down the stairs too fast he finds himself literally clapping his hand over his mouth to keep the words in, clamping his own hand over his own mouth as he follows his not-daughter down the stairs of his not-den to see his not-son, and his other, infant not-daughter, and he actually has memories of them, he actually remembers the four or five years they've existed, the six or seven he's spend with Danicka, making them and making this home and making these memories that are so real that they even remind him

exactly why

this cannot be.

Lukas's heart is breaking. He stands at the bottom of the stairs, locked in place, and then there's his mate who is not his mate, pushing the infant into his arms. He does not take the child.

He backs away.

"I can't." He lowers his hand just enough to say that. "I can't, Danička, whoever you are, I can't. I -- "

he searches for a reason, hunts for one,

"I can't."

Comes up with nothing better than that.

[descent.] She always saw him clearly. What was it he always thought, always wanted to be able to see her with?

perfect fucking clarity.

And this child that is not his, the little girl who is getting in the way and tickling Zlata's toes and cooing at her as though she can make her stop whining for one or either of her parents to give her nonstop attention -- that's her very name. Because when Danicka got pregnant,

no,

several months into the pregnancy, long after the initial tears and fear and the night-long conversations had been subsumed into acceptance, he laid with her and had his hand on her and told her about those nights when he wanted nothing but to be able to see her as clearly as she always seemed to see him. She didn't say anything then. She touched his hair and understood, and months later, when he was finally able to see his daughter for the first time,

-- there'd been a battle, and he couldn't be in the hospital anyway, and Danicka couldn't have him in the room, god no, he'd been fighting a war while the girl was taking her first breaths and screaming them back out at the world, and he thought the same thing he's saying now, I can't, I can't do this, I can't live like this, I can't fight like this, knowing what I might leave behind, I can't --

Danicka told him her name was Klára, introduced him to the newborn, and introduced the newborn to him, and he remembers thinking briefly

I can't.

But I will.

Danicka always saw deeper into him than he thought she did. And she sees it now, as he's refusing to hold Zlatuška, sees more than what he says. Her brow furrows in a hard, sudden frown. She lowers her voice to a whisper, aware that there are Garou upstairs, crowding the tops of the steps. So she keeps her voice down, but they can still hear hints of it filtering upward.

"I am so not in the mood for this fight again," she says, the voice of someone worn out from a long day, strained by unexpected changes in her evening plans, strained by rage, struggling to hold onto some scrap of positivity.

Their five year old goes quiet then, sensing the tension between them, and holds onto her sister's foot, wiggling it back and forth a bit. Zlata kicks reflexively, whining. Danicka bounces her gently on her hip, eyes turned up to meet her mate's.

"You went through this with Klára, you went through this with Petr, and now you need to go through it with Zlata," Danicka murmurs, with as much patience as she can muster. "She. Will be. Okay. Just hold her."

[Wyrmbreaker] He has memories of all this. It's not merely an illusion conjured up for the right-now, the right-here. He has an entire history unfurling somehow in his mind; he remembers missing the birth of his firstborn,

and the second, and the third,

and he remembers nights when he came home to his family but had to leave again because the baby just wouldn't stop screaming and he could neither comfort it nor stand its wailing, and if he didn't get out right-now-right-now he'd kill someone.

He remembers thinking:

I can't live like this. I can't deal with this. I can't bear this, knowing I might snap any second and...

I can't. But I will.

And there's the woman who looks and smells and may as well be his mate, but is not his mate; not yet, anyway -- holding the baby out to him again, and somehow it'd be easier if she were just infinitely patiently, saintly, loving, because then he'd know this was an illusion, but she's not. She's impatient and strained, it's been a long day, and he brought home seven other Garou to tromp around their house and frighten the children and:

she will be okay. Just hold her.

Lukas reaches out for the baby, hesitantly, utterly uncertain. How does one hold something so small and fragile? How are his hands even clean enough for such a thing, he who killed more things than he can count; he who killed his own? I can't, he thinks,

but I will.

Lukas finds the knowledge there in his bones when he reaches for the baby. Memories that were not his but are somehow his, nonetheless: guiding him to place this hand here, that hand there; to cradle the child against his forearm and his bicep, his ribs, and the thought flashes in his mind then:

from this you were made.

He looks at Danicka: some storm quelled now, swallowing once. "Okay," he says. "I'm holding her."

[Blood Summons] Blood Summons, normally so light- and sure-footed, stumbles as they're entering the house--den--belonging to the blond gatekeeper. It's hard to tell if he's getting worn out or if he's just distracted by the scene before him now. They've come to the last gate, and just as with the rest of them, as it has been at every gate prior to this one, Lukas has to go on alone. There is nothing the rest of them can do to help.

He follows the females up the stairs and into the bathroom, where he waits his turn to get in there and get the muddy blood off of his arms and face. It's a wonder they didn't scare the children, tromping in there torn up and smelling like sweat and cold and toil. Maybe they were too focused on Daddy to notice. In either case, Bob is the last one up the stairs, the last one to reach the landing, and he's one of the last ones in the bathroom. Perhaps he shares the sink with Adamidas, pulling his black t-shirt over his head to reveal a sweat-stained white A-shirt underneath. Perhaps he has to jostle her out of the way while he soaps his flesh and washes grit and filth down the drain. Perhaps he lets the females go first. In either case, at some point he's joining the other Fosterns on the top of the stairs.

He eases his thin, long legs between their shoulders and parks himself on the step in front of Lila's feet, leaning back against them as though bone-weary and yet shot through with potential energy, with the need to keep moving. Feeding had sated him for a time, but now it's sublimated into movement.

He sits still. He watches.

"That's his mate?" he asks, his gruff voice held low and quiet so as not to filter downstairs.

[Rain of Brass Petals] She shared the sink, though the mirror was a little harder to get from the theurge. She borrowed a hairbrush, taking a moment to inspect in, convinced that this is an odd motion. She is using someone else's hairbrush, letting dark brown hairs mingle with lighter ones. She strokes down, and hte sound it makes once it makes its first pass is one that sounds like something snapping or tearing. Adam winced, more at the sound than the gesture, and continued.

Eventually, her hair didn't make that sound anymore; the impending hairball was discarded in a nearby trashcan. She eyes the Listerine warily, instead choosing to rinse her mouth out with water. Gargle, don't swallow, spit and repeat. It's a dance she's used to performing, moving between the Godi and whoever else was sharing the space.

She finally goes to the stairs, sits below Katherine, wherever she may be, and takes to watching and idly braiding a couple strands of hair together.

[Truth's Meridian] Katherine, now clean again in borrowed clothing, perhaps jeans and a long sleeved shirt of some order with her fair hair combed smooth against her shoulders is tugging at the sleeve ends with her fingers like a fidgety child might; her blue eyes fixed on the landing of the first floor as if she could not imagine tearing them away.

Blood Summons joins them, once he's also clean, followed by Rain of Brass Petals, who sits a step beneath her. As she did with Lila, Katherine answers him thoughtlessly, softly as if she herself were a little uncertain: "Yes, that's Danicka. But also not. It's some sort of glimpse into a future Lukas must want." A beat, her voice sorrowful. "Or might have, should he live so long."

[Waking Dream] [seriously, Lila. Don't cry like a wuss. WP!]
Dice Rolled:[ 5 d10 ] 2, 2, 4, 7, 10 (Success x 2 at target 6)

[Waking Dream] Lila combs her fingers through Blood Summons' hair when he leans against Kate and herself, playing with it as if he were a girl, as if his hair was much longer. Her fingers tighten, once, when her throat constricts, when her eyes very nearly close, lashes kissing. When they peel away, there's a brightness to her eyes that wasn't there before, something salt-washed and tidal, and she exhales quietly, leaving the Fostern theurges hair alone to continue watching, silent, hopeful, her heart in her eyes, because Lila's glass (not ice, never).

[descent.] And there in his memory is the torrent of swearing Danicka let out when she found out she was pregnant again, and losing her shit while he tried to wrap his mind around going through all of it again, when Petr was barely a year old as it was. Getting home in the middle of some night and washing the blood off of himself, forcing himself through the motions before he allowed himself to check on his daughter and son because it wasn't worth the risk of having them wake up and see him like that, then crawling into bed beside Danicka and breathing her in and closing his eyes

only to be woken by the hiccuping wailing of that little blonde boy who would later need glasses, only to rage inwardly at his children and at himself for being angry with them. The irony of his exhaustion being that if he weren't so drained from battle, he might have snapped. The cold, heavy dread that he might snap anyway. The anger unleashed on packmates putting him up for the night because, well

he couldn't be home right then, could he?

There's more, though. Like that night stroking his hand aimlessly over and over and over on Danicka's belly, still flat, unable to stop himself. Til she laughed and caught it and kissed his palm and told him he was ridiculous. And being able to be home so many other nights, not special occasions but just... walking in and managing dinner with them. Watching first Klara, then Petr, grow to trust him even though he scared them, believing that even though he always seemed angry and even though he sometimes yelled, he loved them. Reading to them. Those incredibly rare, infinitely precious evenings where he actually got to participate in putting them to bed,

and the way Danicka would quietly and gently guide him through a routine he wasn't familiar with, using her eyes to tell him the stuffed lamb goes with Petr and the stuffed puppy goes with Klara

and later

she has to set out her clothes for morning now, before she gets in bed, so make sure she doesn't forget socks

and later

he can brush his own teeth, now, just stay nearby to make sure he actually does it.

Now there's his youngest in his arms, and Danicka has more than once said quite firmly that she doesn't care if her half-sister had six children, she's done at three, she was done at two but clearly Gaia had some other plans, that capricious bitch. Zlata's the last. Instinct and memory tells him what to do when he takes her from the gatekeeper. She's tiny enough still, even though Danicka calls her chubby baby, that he barely feels her. Feels like she'll fly out of his arms if he isn't careful. Feels like he could crush her, if he isn't careful.

So he'll have to be careful.

His daughter whines, and twists, and does not lie still and thumb-sucking in his arms. She arches her back and cries out, struggling because he scares her, because she can't bear it.

Danicka stays where she is. She puts her palm over Zlata's forehead, shhing the baby in at least a couple of different languages. "Hold her like this," she instructs quietly, helping Lukas turn her more upright, head to his chest, arm under her bum. "She likes to look around."

Zlata isn't looking around, though. She's whimpering, and yet laying her head right on Lukas's chest where his heart is, torn between fear and comfort. Danicka rubs her back, and meets Lukas's eyes, and the routine blossoms in his mind. They're going to walk together, Danicka touching the baby and him holding her, so that the mother can move away without abandoning the child to her father's rage. And they're going to be in the kitchen together, where Zlata can see Danicka working on the potatoes.

So this is what happens. Without taking her hand off of the baby, Danicka starts to walk with Lukas to the kitchen, where there's poultry and yes, potatoes needing to be mashed, and peas because apparently Petr thinks green things are fun if they at least roll around.

But then she has to take her hand off of Zlata. And instantly, the baby starts to struggle again, crying and whimpering, burying her face in exhausted frustration on Lukas's chest.

[Blood Summons] Kate answers him, while Lila just sweeps her thin fingers through his unruly if now damp curls, her fingernails scritching against his clean scalp as he rests against her shins, his shoulders pressing against her knees. It appears to calm him down somewhat, for he leans his head back, but then she's stopping, and she's swallowing thickly, and then she's blowing out a breath that sounds almost agonized. Bob looks up at her, tilting his head all the way back until the back of his head touches her thighs, then reaches his right hand down to wrap it around the top of her foot and squeeze, gently, not because he's afraid of snapping off one of his nails but to reassure her, to let her know It's okay.

"Does he have kids?" he asks. "I mean, back home? Or you think he just wants them?"

[Wyrmbreaker] This is another memory Lukas has, that he's never actually lived:

Telling Danicka, I was happy with two, when she said she's done with three. Telling her that while his hand was on her still-flat belly, his head laid in her lap, the two of them sprawling in their bed late at night when the children were finally asleep. But I'll love this one just the same.

He remembers kissing her stomach, then. He remembers her fingers in his hair,

and how, with children in the house, they had to be quiet.

None of that really happened. He hasn't lived any of it. Has he?

She shows him how to hold the baby, which she has to do every time because he's home so rarely, and his children can stand him so rarely, and Lukas is wincing because she's afraid of him and she wants comfort from him, and he can't help either impulse. He is not a creature built for comfort. He cannot let go of the rage that burns inside him, which is so deeply woven into the weave and weft of him that he would not be himself without it.

He is not a creature built for any of this. Mate. Children. Family. A life outside the war: a precious, precarious family that cannot work, but will; a life that will inevitably shatter one day

when he dies.

"Danička," he tries again, low, "I can't do this. Look at her, she's afraid of me. She's too young. And this..." he draws a breath, "Danička, none of this is real. I just..."

Lukas squeezes his eyes shut for a moment. Open again, flaring blue.

"I don't know what you want of me."

[Truth's Meridian] Katherine merely shakes her head at the Metis; no, no children. Did he want them? This Katherine cannot answer. Were it asked of her prior to this night, years before she might have laughed and said don't be ridiculous, Lukas? Her Lukas, with a child? Laughable, laughable. If she were asked only last week, she would have paused, and thought it over, mulled it as she does now before answering much the same.

"I couldn't say. It is not my place to answer."

[Waking Dream] "I just," Lila murmurs, loam-soft, loam-under-moss, underthing voice, under-breath voice. "I hate the idea that anyone is afraid to have -- this. This kind of life -- if they want -- because -- because it'll be hard; because of what might happen -- I don't know. But," humor, lean against it: "I bet they argued about whether or not they were gonna read The Giving Tree to 'em."

[Blood Summons] "What's 'The Giving Tree'?" Bob asks.

[Rain of Brass Petals] It's a Black Fury who would watch this intently. The commentary goes on; Adam takes in what she is hearing around her. She does not, however, waver in watching him. There are children, there is a mate, there's a kid screaming and there's all sorts of normal household things going on here. A daughter who was unhappy, demanding for things to be better, but having little luck. Dinner being made.

And at the same time, there was an ahroun conflicted. Don't train them for this, do they? And her mind reels over things that they all learn through their training and Rites oF Passage. What she has learned, that motherhood is sacred but... but now she looks at him, and she wonders if her tribe, or at the very least the people who taught her, neglected to discuss something very... very important.

What's The Giving Tree?
She turns to Bob, puts her hands together like she was going to clap, then opens them so her pinkies are touching. She then gives a nod and a thumbs up after that gesture is completed.

[descent.] Upstairs, the Garou who have all gone through their own gates, their own trials, their own sacrifices, sit and watch and listen. They hear the quiet, labored breathing of Wasted Winter down the hall, where she laid down on the guest bed with her bells and her ancientness, staring at a wall that slowly becomes more and more blurry the longer this goes on. They comfort each other, staying quiet. Or they simply listen and watch. Occasionally, the little blond boy on the couch looks past the railing of the stairs at them, staring curiously before going back to his Legos.

In the kitchen, Danicka's hands tighten around bowl and potato masher as Lukas tells her he can't do this, that this isn't real. Their eldest is still with them, trying to help with Zlata, but it only seems to distract and overstimulate the baby more.

"Klárinka, sweetheart," she says, "go play with your brother for a few minutes." She doesn't add 'okay?' to the end of her sentence the way many adults are wont to do with children, trying to make instruction sound like negotiation. And maybe it's her tone, or maybe it's the fact that she's not really Danicka and that's not a real child, but Klara doesn't argue. She looks between her parents, lets go of her baby sister's foot, and thumps quickly out to the living room to jump on the couch and scatter Legos and

she and Petr get into a brief argument where he snaps at her for disrupting his work and she rolls her eyes and gives an exasperated Sorry.

Danicka puts down the potato masher and turns on Lukas. Her eyes are that vivid green they are when she's the most frightened, or the most angry. "We want your life, son of Gaia," she says, as Zlata is reaching up and grabbing at his ear, hiccuping with unease and tears against his chest. "We don't want you to win the war. We don't want you to try to guide the wheel of seasons. We don't want you to save the world. We want. Your life."

[Blood Summons] "It's a book?"

The mule drops his head back against Lila's knees, his hand still resting atop her shoe. He doesn't squeeze anymore, though. It's just there, a solid warm presence atop her foot; he smells like soap and water, with thin overlays of sweat and dirt coming from his beaten-to-death clothing.

"What's it about?"

[Wyrmbreaker] Lukas takes Zlata's tiny hand --

but gently

-- and guides it down from his ear to his shirt and the buttons there. It shakes him to the core to know how familiar this feels, how natural: here, chubby baby, play with Daddy's buttons. Don't pull Daddy's ear.

And now the adults are staring at each other, the Garou and his mate, the Garou and the gatekeeper, and what she says makes him frown in sudden, spasmodic confusion, or denial.

"You want me to give this up?" Anger rises in him now, so fast it dizzies him, blanches the blood from his cheeks, makes his eyes hard and vicious as ice, as gemstones.

Lukas cannot hear the speculation at the top of the stairs. All the better, because he wouldn't be able to stand it: the thought that six strangers -- well, one packmate and five fucking strangers -- were discussing him, dissecting this most intimate slice of his not-life, picking him apart under the goddamn spotlight. They wonder if this is what he wants, or what is ahead for him. Lukas would have said he didn't want this. This is the last thing he wants: a family he cannot be close to, a mate whose hard-won freedom and life was derailed and offset and postponed by children, by cubs who bear his face and his blood and so much of him, that he hardly ever sees. That he will not live to see grow up, graduate school, get married, succeed in their careers and their lives, grow old.

This is the last thing he wants,

but when the Gatekeeper asks it of him, his anger is white-hot, beats from him like a silent storm.

"You want me," he seethes between clenched teeth, "to give this up for your fucking rite?"

[Truth's Meridian] At some point between Blood Summons asking about The Giving Tree and the sudden sharp spike of anger from downstairs; the Silver Fang breathes out and rises to her feet. "I can't do this. I can't sit here and half listen, excuse me," she steps back up onto the second story landing and moves back down the pretend hall of Lukas and Danicka's not-real home and into the guest room where their resting guide lays; her breathing even.

Katherine stops in the doorway a moment, just observing Wasted Winter, and then steps fully inside and settles herself against a wall, keeping watch.

[Waking Dream] "A book," she affirms, voice sifting even further toward -- what? Smoke, ash, quietude. "Every library has it. I'll show you. It's bright, bright green and it's about a boy who talks to a tree. The tree gives up everything." And then, Kate is standing, and Lila watches her stand, turns her head to stare down the hallway toward the door to the room that Wasted Winter is sleeping in. She winds her fingers through Blood Summons' hair, again, but this time it's more absent (vaguer [dreaming, again]). "I think I'm going to watch Youngest Mother, Oldest Friend as well." Then, gently -- tender, even, eyes closing against what's going on downstairs, she stands, wiping her hands on her thighs. Pauses, to look down the stairs at the blond-child-who-may-never-be, the dark-haired-galliard-who-might-not-ever, the shadows that Lukas and not-Danicka throw from the kitchen. Then: she follows in Kate's wake.

[Waking Dream] ooc: strike the 'as well' and add a 'over' before Youngest Mother. and add a rhya, too! sheesh.

[Sorrow] Sorrow is a shadow. She has cleaned herself up like the rest of them; found her way through the home, washed the blood and filthy from her hands and from her hair, rinsed away from the earth from her mouth, the blood and bile, the memory of the needle and the matched little stitches that bind her eye and tongue and heart and the stone of memory under the skin, the thread that attaches the shapes she inhabits and the worlds she walks to herself.

She's quiet; she watches. There's a faint twist of recognition on her mouth when Lila mentions The Giving Tree, but she does not offer him explanation, leaves that to Lila, to the Fostern, to the Child of Gaia. Kate brushes by her; refuses this moment of pain and finds another.

Deathwatch -

- Sorrow turns, dark eyes tracing in the wake of the Silver Fang. Hands in her pockets, her attention loose, limited, passing - she follows in their wake, finds the room, finds the bed, finds the death-to-come.

"Thank you for acting as our guide, -rhya." Sorrow does not settle against the wall. She circles the bed, stays close, her voice low and rich and sure.

[Blood Summons] The female Fosterns decide that they're going to head downstairs and see what is happening with the seventh gatekeeper, and Bob sits quietly as he watches one and then the other stand and descend the staircase to watch the proceedings. He looks over at his auspicemate, then reaches out to clasp her shoulder, once, strong, before hauling himself standing. He's a tall figure on his own, without the eclipse offered by the other male, and rather than heading downstairs after the others, turns and trudges up the rest of the stairs to hit the landing. His nostrils flare once, and he follows the presence of the Galliard to stand in the doorway of the bedroom where Wasted Winter is lying, breathing heavily, perhaps preparing for death.

While Sorrow circles, Blood Summons just watches, hands in his pockets and shoulder against the doorjamb.

[descent.] The look of compassion, of ache, comes so quickly and so familiarly to not-Danicka's expression that the ground rushes out from under him for a moment. She puts her hand on his cheek, past the struggling and stressed baby, past the daughter he doesn't have, to touch him with a hand he finds so known and so warm that it hurts.

"No," she whispers, and strokes her thumb over his cheekbone. "No, son of Gaia."

Danicka -- the gatekeeper -- withdraws, and wraps her hands around the baby's midsection, lifting her away from Lukas and taking her back, holding her close. It's been long enough, for someone so young. And he knows: it's minutes at a time, at first. Mere moments with his child, to bond with them in infancy, to start getting them used to him. Over time he'll be able to hold her longer, meet her eyes, even play with her. But it takes patience. It takes so much patience. So much time.

Upstairs, when Katherine and Lila and Kora and Blood Summons go to check on the ritemistress, they find a woman withered and shrunken by age, her breath wheezing softly on the bedspread as she stares blindly at the window. She's alive. She isn't moving. She's listening. And she is dying.

The gatekeeper's hands are as manicured as Danicka's. Oval fingernails, given a light, clear polish. She doesn't always have time or energy to do certain things for herself that she used to, but she maintains her hands. She sits at the kitchen table on Sunday mornings and pushes down her cuticles and trims and files and buffs and polishes them while she drinks her coffee, does this one tiny thing for herself that makes her feel like a girl, she says. She holds one hand on the back of Zlata's head, the other rubbing Zlata's back.

Her eyes hold his.

"We want you to live."

Her head turns, her lips pressing to the baby's temple. She's calming now, her hiccups slowing, her breath steadying as her mother sways slowly from side to side. "Give up the peace of an early grave. Give up the clarity of fatalism. Give up the control that cold distance will give you."

Those on the stairs see a dark-haired and a light-haired child, both blue-eyed though their baby sister has green ones, slide off the couch and link hands, walking into the kitchen. Lukas, standing with the gatekeeper in front of him, sees them out of the corner of his eye, filling the doorway between one room and the other, watching their parents. Danicka does not take her eyes from him, or slow the lazy circuit of her palm over her daughter's back.

"This is the one gate where we cannot take from you what you will not give. So you must choose: the war, or why you fight it. The comfort of letting go, or the agony of holding on. What is easy or what is hard.

"Death or life, son of Gaia."

[Waking Dream] Winter's dying. This has to be good. Winter's dying, going down, seeing blind, and it has to be good. There's always death before life and life before death and it's a cycle. It's a rite. It's a ritual. It is what it is. It's an old woman, lying in bed, listening, so frail, so withered, she looks as if all the years are tugging at her at once.

Waking Dream (Breaking Heart) kneels by the edge of the bed and takes Wasted Winter's hand. There's something tentative there, because, as with the cubs, she's just not sure what the etiquette is, not certain what she should do. Knows, though, what she wants to do. Does it.

[Wyrmbreaker] A tension quakes through Lukas when his not-mate takes his not-child: an instinct to hold on, to snap his teeth and snarl mine! mine! my! mine! even when she is not (yet); even when the one who takes her away is the one who bore her.

Then he relinquishes the baby. Danicka-the-gatekeeper takes Zlata, and it aches to see how much better at this she is: how practiced her hold, how gentle and firm her hands.

Lukas looks at her for some time, torn, not quite understanding. He doesn't know what that means: we want you to live. He doesn't know if they mean to take from him his rage, his wolf, that which makes him Lukas Wyrmbreaker. He doesn't know what they want, really, because:

we want you to live

could mean so many things.

He turns away from the vision of his mate after a moment. He looks at the two elder children, the two cubs that bear his face and hers, but do not exist yet. And slowly, almost unwillingly, the Ahroun sinks to a crouch, holding his hands out to them.

"Pojď sem," he says to them, as softly as he can. "Dovolte mi, abych vás vidím."

If they come to him, he puts his hands on them: their tiny faces, their soft hair, their thin limbs. Touching them as though to ascertain that they are real, or at least the possibility of them; to remind himself of the memories he does not yet have. The lamb goes with Petr. The wolf, with Klara. He's going to buy Klara a bicycle for her fifth birthday, a red one with a white seat, and it'll have training wheels that rattle for the first sixth months. He'll take them off and he won't be here to see her ride it, most the times she rides it, and when he is, he'll have to bite back the words:

Klárinka, zpomalit!

And someday Klara will change, and maybe one of the others too, and he'll know that heartbreak too. That his children are just like him, and will face the same early death,

or hard life full of loneliness and apart-ness,

as he does now.

He lets go his children-that-are-not-yet. Lukas stands and faces the gatekeeper, and speaks to her as his mate.

"Jste šťastní, takto?"

[descent.] It makes him tense, and it makes him ache. It confuses him, and he doesn't know if this will be or if it is all just an illusion. It kills him when Klara and Petr walk over to him and let him touch their faces, bravely. And his hair is gold, and her eyes are a slightly murky sort of blue that can change with her mood and hide as much as they reveal. That hurts, too. Danicka's jawline in Petr's face. The slope of his own brow and his nose in Klara's features. The mingling of both, until it's impossible to say who they look more like, or if they simply look like themselves.

The gatekeeper gives him a soft smile. And he knows this too, and it hurts.

"Ona tu není tady," is the gentle reply.

[Wyrmbreaker] He knows that, of course. But it hurts anyway to hear it: that all this is a could-be, that all is could just as easily be a could-never-be.

Lukas closes his eyes for a moment. Bows his head, raises his hand to the bridge of his nose, conceals his face for a moment.

Then, softly and clearly:

"I cannot choose, because the choice is not mine. But whatever comes to me, I will accept.

"If it is to be war, a glorious death, an early grave, and little left behind, I will accept it. And if it is to be this -- a family that must struggle to love me, and that I must struggle to love; a life that I did not plan and did not prepare for and can neither foresee nor control; a life that might tear asunder any moment --

"Then I accept that, too. Gladly."

There's a pause. Then he puts his hand out, resting the curve of his palm gently, tenderly, on the curve of the infant's head.

"Chci ono."

[descent.] Upstairs, a Theurge, a Philodox, and two Galliards watch as their guide's thinning ribs expand to take in the deepest breath she can, rattling in her mouth and throat and inside her chest. She cannot feel Lila's hand on her hand, cannot see her in front of her eyes, but she can feel her there, smell her dimly with senses that are giving way. The quilt on the bed looks old. Not as old as Wasted Winter. There's a tree in the back yard, and its branches scrape the window of the room they're in.

The others -- two young girls, two Cliaths of tribes that are traditionally at one another's throats -- sit on the steps, listening to Lukas tell the gatekeeper who is not his mate that he cannot choose. Perhaps they close their eyes, waiting for everything they have done in the rite to be for naught, waiting to be told that he has failed because the best he can say is I will accept. A small green stone pulses faintly in Joey's palm, like a heartbeat, like life, like that which is worth loving despite the grief of its loss.

"Your death is inevitable, and unforseeable, and uncontrollable," intones the gatekeeper, her hand and his hand meeting on the youngest child's. "You cannot choose it, and accepting it is not a choice. It will come as surely as the spring.

"It is weak," she says, as behind him his daughter and his son give small gasps, their hands coming unclasped, their outlines trembling in his peripheral vision, "to let fate decide for you."

Upstairs, Wasted Winter is shaking, her mouth open to breathe, her hands growing thinner and thinner in Lila's own palm.

Downstairs, Lukas's children begin to fade into their own nonexistence. The spirit that is not his mate stares at him. "The gate is open. The way is filled with pain and uncertainty. You must choose to walk through it."

[Wyrmbreaker] Unaware of what happens upstairs, unaware of Lila's hand on their guide's failing hand --

Lukas reaches forward, catches the gatekeeper's hand in his own. Holds, knowing she is not really here: holding, anyway.

"Then I choose it." Firm now; no hesitation. "I choose life, and -- "

not a hesitation, this, but simply a searching for words that better encapsulates what he means. There are none. The rest of it, the laundry list he could go down: the children, the memories, the struggle that every single fucking day is, the unexpected setbacks that blindside you, the unexpected joy that hits you the exact same way, all of that -- only pieces, only facets, fragments of the whole:

"I choose life."

[Blood Summons] Lila holds onto the hand of the figure who has not been with them since the first gate, since Blood Summons was the last one left standing after sleep had claimed all six of his fellow travelers, since she'd rested her hand on the bloody remains of his hand and whispered something to him that even the most reluctant of them had not been able to pick out. Bob watches, his gaze steady and his jaw set, as Wasted Winter breathes weakly and wheezing, his sinewy arms crossed over his chest and his shoulder and hip resting against the bedroom door.

He watches, and his breathing is quiet and unheard. It's as though he's attempting to listen to the above and the beneath at the same time, as though his full attention is not on the dying Theurge in front of them. The youngest of them are left out on the stairwell, listening to what is happening downstairs while the older females and the metis are left behind with Wasted Winter. Blood Summons draws a breath, then stands away from the doorframe, taking long loose-limbed steps over to the bed to sit down beside Lila.

"Come on," he says, his sandpaper voice quiet.

[Rain of Brass Petals] Her stomach was tense, uneasy, daring to bring up the food she had managed to force down earlier. She listens, with her elbows on her knees and her eyes distant. She is sitting on the steps with a female Fenrir, with someone who she had said before had astounded her. Adam gave no gestures, there was only stillness and she waits.

She waits to hear some kind of notion, that he had failed, that spring would not come, that her faith in him, in all of them, had been misplaced. She waits to have her suspicions, her prejudices confirmed, and Alethea Adamidas, Amanda Carrick Rain of Brass Petals waited.

The way is filled with pain and uncertainty.
He chose life and-

No and. He chose life, there was nothing else in that. The Fury looked at Joey, mouth closed, before she looked back down the stairs.

[Sorrow] Sorrow looks up, looks from Wasted Winter to Blood Summons, to Lila, who holds the hand of the dying Theurge. They dug a grave for winter, and now the death rattle is in her lungs.

She is a still thing, watchful; her hair is loose again. It catches the failing light in the room as she walks, hands in her back pockets now, the line of her arms foreshortened by the dark bracelets she wears on either wrist - reminders of other lives, other deaths, other worlds in which they live. She has two runes tattooed on her inner wrists, just above the point of the pulse - visible beneath the bracelets, dark against her pale flesh. One says thought and one says memory. Sorrow stops at the foot of the bed, quiet now, quiet ever, considering the dying theurge - once for each - then lifts her chin to Blood Summons in passing acquiescence, circles the room, walks in front of Katherine and behind Blood Summons and Lila, out into the hallway, her shadows multipartite crawl and swim along the walls as she walks toward the top of the stairs.

[descent.] At once, though no one will ever know it happened at the same instant, Wasted Winter's hand tightens like a vise on Lila's

and Lukas's hand wraps around the hand of the female-bodied spirit who is not his mate, his Danička, the mother of his children that may never be, the chosen form of the keeper of his gate.

The world shatters for the second time during their rite. The first time it was a plunge into darkness, a wide chasm opening up and swallowing them in a black abyss. This time, the ritemistress opens her mouth

and Lukas makes his choice

and everything they know explodes into Light, shaking the very foundations of the house they stand in, breaking them down in cracks and chunks, crumbling around them. Wasted Winter holds onto Lila. Joey and Adamidas tumble downwards as the stairs give way. The hallway around Kora begins to break apart on either side of her, above her, the floor shuddering under her feet. Blood Summons and Katherine see the tree outside disintegrating, falling to dust, pieces of it becoming indistinguishable from the snow coming down.

She who is not his mate clasps Lukas's hand in her own, laces their fingers. Light auras around Zlata, golden and shining, searing like a sunset, til he can't see her, and he can't see the gatekeeper, he can't see anything other than

white.

The ground is cold, and snow is falling, misting downward. There are trees overhead, still barren. Their branches creak in the breeze. Sunset has come and gone. Their hands are empty, except

Joey's, which holds a small green stone, and

Kora's, which is wrapped around the neck of a guitar that was not there before, that she tried to leave behind, and

Kate's, which is grasping tight at a handful of earth itself, fingers dug deep into the dirt, and

Lila's, holding a single spine broken from the rack of a stag, and

Lukas's, which is wrapped tightly around something so small that his own fist eclipses it entirely, and his grip refuses to let it go.

In the distance, they hear voices. Song. Smell fire and food and alcohol. Their kin. Their people.

When they open their eyes, they see new shoots poking up out of the snow, out of the cold ground, bright green and defiant of winter. They see the underbrush rustling with the escape of a small, lithe body, the flash of moonlight on long red hair, the muffled chiming of seven bells.

[descent.] He knows what it is before he opens his hand to look. He feels its softness and smallness. Feels the crackle of that fake silver thread that gives the weave those sparklies. Knows: pink. Green stripes. White dots. He knows the other one is still missing.
