viscosity.

[-viscosity-] OK folks! This is gonna be a pretty standard dicetastic scene. Nothing fancy. Ergo:

1. 10 min per post OR LESS. Preferably less. If we're dicing, declare in 3 min. Roll in 2 or I'll roll for you.
2. No posting order, but please post ONCE for every post I make.
3. Keep track of your own health and tempers.
4. Questions in the chat. Don't IM me. If I don't see the question, repeat it until I do *LOL* If I don't respond for minutes on end -- I'm probably posting. You should wait, unless it's absolutely urgent, upon which you should PM me once.
5. PM me your applicable flaws. This includes stuff like nightmares and phobias and hatreds and compulsions.
6. If there are any off-limits themes, imagery or events you do NOT want to see in a scene, PM 'em to me now.
7. Go ahead and post yourselves in. We are near Crown Fountain:

[Until Death] There are a lot of things that go unspoken between the three sisters, but who it is they choose to associate with in their spare time is not one of those things.

As they walk through the park tonight, out for meat on a stick and hot chocolate and indulgence in the sights downtown, Irene is taking advantage of the fact that her Rage is not so easily tipped over the edge and her sensibilities taken with it to actually attempt to have some semblance of a conversation with the two teenagers with whom she shares a totem bond, a bed, and something resembling friendship.

She's smoking, of course, having finished her corn dog already.

"Alek was talkin' to a guy last night," she tells Adamidis, blowing a stream of smoke out of the corner of her mouth and over her sister's head.

[Rain of Brass Petals] She makes little pleased noises when she eats.

It's half a growl, half an uttered, half whispered sound of satisfaction as she bites into a corn dog, as she chews, as she unabashedly decimates food as though it were her sworn enemy. She's under five and a half feet tall, and not wearing platforms. She's not wearing makeup, she's not even wearing her nose ring (today's a stud day, she decided) and the Fury is half way through a foot long corn dog. Overall, it was a good experience.

"Who was he?" the Yankee asks her companion, "was he cute? Does he have a pool?"

Three most important things right up front.

[Truth's Meridian] There was barely a moon to be called such at all tonight, it played games with the heavy cloud cover that seemed intent on dusting the grounds of the park with a smattering of snow, and beside the great Crown Fountain with its sculptured red tiles forming the visage of a face that spouted water at passersby, there was a lone figure standing before it, observing it.

She was tall, perhaps almost six foot in the high arched boots she wore to the knee in pristine white leather, and her hair was pale gold in the moonlight, the crown of it lost beneath a knitted cap, pulled low against the chill in the air. Unlike the Furies approaching at a slow, steady pace, she is not eating, or smoking. Her hands are tucked in the pockets of her winter's coat, and she seemed in a state of deep contemplation, the Silver Fang known as Truth's Meridian, known to be a pack-mate of Lukas Wyrmbreaker.

If she scents the other Garou in the air, she does not acknowledge it quite yet.

[Kindly One] They're walking together, but Alek's attention is apparently elsewhere. Her corn dog has long since been finished, the wrapper lost in a trash been a few feet back. The eldest of the Squad of Ultimate Badasses walks a little to the side of her younger sisters, watching the people who skirt the trio. It always seems to amuse her, the way people react to them, especially the ones who happen to meet her dark eyes.

The conversation between Irene and Adam has half of her attention. That is, until Irene tells Adam that their alpha was talking to a guy last night. She turns her attention back to her sisters, eyes wide in an almost innocent expression. Except nothing about Alek ever seems completely innocent.

She smiles, a corner of her mouth lifting as her eyes roll up to the cloud choked sky. "Trent something. He was alright. I don't think he has a pool. Would you like a pool? I think I could get us a pool."

[-viscosity-] Crown Fountain: two monoliths of glass bricks opposite one another across an expanse of black granite. Faces of random Chicagoans projected onto the towers grin, laugh, smile at one another; in the summertime, they pantomime the spitting of water.

It's too cold for that, though. There's no water spouting from the monoliths. They stand mute and brilliant, ever-changing, casting multicolored lights onto the snowstrewn expanse below.

Or. Well. There shouldn't be water spouting. But suddenly, and utterly unexpectedly, a jet of water emits from the north tower. It splatters onto the cold ground and begins to freeze immediately.

The enormous face of an unknown human grins out at the Garou benignly. There's no explanation for the malfunction.

[Truth's Meridian] A jet of water emits from one of the stone fountains, the one across from Katherine. She hears the sssptt! as the water leaves the great stone slab and turns, momentarily pulled from her reverie of thought with a frown. She glances down at the freezing puddle, then raises pale eyes to the giant grinning face.

Katherine scowled back at it.
She wasn't in the mood, it seemed.

[Rain of Brass Petals] "I want a pool," she tells her sister, "and a pony. Mostly a pony, though."

She seems to think this amusing. Saying that she wanted a pony, but at that mment it is free reign for the Fury's mind to start wandering to Pegasus gafflings and tactics, and whether or not she can hold her own in mounted combat, or whether or not she really would need a pony, flying or otherwise, at all.

Water spurts and the theurge stops, immediately, to avoid getting wet. She looks at the monolith, cocking her head to the side and something tingles on her senses. The fountain malfunctions.

"... that's not supposed to do that."

[Until Death] Until Death isn't the most observant of the three young women who make up the pack's ranks. Sure, there are times when it seems as though she has eyes in the back of her head, like she can see a fight coming from a mile off, but then there are times when if it isn't something completely deviated from normality it manages to sneak right past her field of perception.

Hell, just a few nights ago, she had been so distracted by a minor victory that she had not noticed a giant fly-eyed creature leaping off of a building until the thing was right on top of her.

So she doesn't notice that the giant video-faced monoliths are not spouting water, doesn't even realize that that is what they were designed to do when the weather is nice and temperatures are high enough. It's hard to tell whether she makes anything of the fact that one of them spits water now, save for the fact that she pauses mid-drag to eye it.

That's not supposed to do that.

"Is it s'posed to be that creepy?" she asks, voice choked with smoke, as she gestures to the thing's smiling face.

[Kindly One] Adam says she'd like a pool, and Alek's mind immediately starts working on how to bring this about for her little sister. They've been in Chicago longer than most of the cities they've found themselves in over the past year, adn they've been settling in. Alek's mind goes to pack houses and kinfolk and claiming territory and kinfolk.

Then the fountain spouts water that freezes as soon as it touches the pavement. Alek dances back, her movements swift, graceful, but not quite fast enough. Water droplets speckle her jeans. She looks down at her booted feet, then up to the grinning visage on the fountain.

"I have no idea."

Stay alert, she adds across the totem link, rather pointlessly, perhaps.

[-viscosity-] The south fountain bears a different face. This one doesn't smile. It stares dully out, nearly motionless. It blinks once, slowly.

Then its mouth purses. Another jet of water joins the first. Liquid hits the snow. The two gouts have hit nearly the center of the fountain -- 50 feet away from the base of the monoliths. That's much, much farther than they're designed to spout. They can hear water splattering -- hard enough to displace snow and hit granite.

Seconds later, a different face spits from the north fountain. And then the south. The videos are playing too fast now. Faces appear, stare, blink in camera-clicks. Water hits the granite, again and again, powerful gouts that blast snow aside, lay bare the stone.

Definitely a malfunction. Major one.

[Until Death] For a while, all Irene does is smoke her cigarette and watch the two monoliths as they hurl water across the distance, as their faces begin to change at a frenetic pace.

"Shit," she breathes, and steps back to stub out her cigarette atop a nearby trash receptacle before feeding the butt into the can's mouth. One last exhale, and she says, "Is this thing just actin' up cuz there's somethin' wrong with the wirin', or is it like, possessed?"

She looks to Adamidis as she asks this last question, the Theurge possessing the greatest capacity to peer across the Gauntlet of the three--four; there's another, albeit impeccably dressed, Garou standing nearby--girls.

[Rain of Brass Petals] She takes a second, observing the fountains and the Fury narrows her eyes. She looks at their faces, the impassive and the benign, and inhales. There had to be something impacting them, because this seemed too odd to simply be a normal sort of malfunction.

"If it were the wiring," she says offhand, "then I would assume there would be a... Hell, I don't know, if it were a malfunction it wouldn't be this inherently creepy. I don't think the City of Chicago is attracting tourists when creepy people are on large glass fountains."

[peeeek!]

[Truth's Meridian] "What the Hell," the elegant Half Moon breathes, and side-steps more droplets as the face alters and spits out another stream of water. She scrutinizes the ever-changing faces for a long moment, and then the distant rise and fall of voices reaches her and she turns her head; catching sight of the three as of yet unknown Black Furies, also observing the fountain's strange behavior.

Its ... wait, behavior? Katherine's brows knit together, and she started toward the trio in quick, determined footsteps.

"Good evening ladies, I am Katherine Bellamonte, and I can see from your expressions you too find this... puzzling." This, being the fountain, and its strange facial morphing. The Philodox's attention wanders briefly between the three other females, before she returns her focus to Crown Fountain.

[-viscosity-] Darkness shrouds this area in the gauntlet. The moon is the thinnest sliver tonight, but even that is invisible in the Umbra. It is entirely black on the otherside.

Taint hangs heavy in the air, like a miasma.
to Rain of Brass Petals

[Kindly One] Adam peeks to the other side of the Umbra, Irene watches the fountain, and Alek keeps her eyes to their surroundings. It's the way they work, one seeing the mystic, one looking at what's directly before them, the other covering all sides.

She sees the tall, impeccably dressed woman striding toward them, and immediately moves to intercept. When Katherine approaches, introduces herself, Alek is all benign smiles, as if this were an ordinary greeting in an ordinary park. The newcomer reeks of breeding that assaults the Fury's senses. Silver Fang, the blonde's blood cries.

"Hello, Daughter of Thunder. I'm Alek Kindly One. These are my sisters, Until Death and Rain of Brass Petals. And yes, this is rather," she looks back over to the fountains, cranes her neck to her sisters to see if Adam is back to herself yet, "puzzling."

[Kindly One] [urk! Daughter of Falcon!]

[-viscosity-] It should also be mentioned:

Crown Fountain has a strong spiritual representation in the Penumbra; stronger than one might have expected. The monoliths, in particular, gleam in the darkness -- flawless, yet with a somehow oily sheen.

There's a dearth of spirits in the area, though naively one would expect many spirits of electricity, of glass, of concrete and of water to congregate at such a celebratory altar to their attributes.
to Rain of Brass Petals

[-viscosity-] (one more post from everyone, and then we're going to inits!)

As Rain of Brass Petals' eyes go blank, the lights in the vicinity of the Fountain flicker, dim, blaze suddenly --

-- and then go out.

Millennium Park and the Loop for a radius of two or three city blocks simply shut down. It's a total blackout. The monoliths remain lit, however, incandescent in the darkness. The faces have frozen: the northern tower, a young girl in her teens, eyes closed, mouth pursed. The southern tower, a elderly man well in his 70s, eyes hovering in mid-blink, dull and dead.

Water sprays endlessly from both fountains, splashing off rock, striking with such force that the back-splatter hits the edges of the fountain.

And then -- it's not water at all. The fluid becomes thick, viscous, opaque, dark. They can hear the difference in the way it strikes the stone. Now and then, a great clot of something, semigelatinous, squeezes out the nozzle and splats onto granite. At the center of the spray is an accumulation of this unknown matter. It grows by the second.

[Until Death] The tallest of the three young women looks, in a word, deranged. At 5'11" what meat is on her bones appears to be hidden beneath her rose-colored Carhartt jacket. Her face is lean and hungry, shadows cast beneath her cheekbones and eyes; and those eyes look as though she's seconds away from screaming, as though she's seconds away from throwing herself at the nearest solid object and laying into it as though it is responsible for all of the pain and anger that is so clearly written into her body. There is very little mistaking her for anything other than what she is, which is a goddamn monster.

Bolts of muscle stand out in her lower jaw as she grinds her teeth with the approach of the blonde, but her eyes don't remove themselves from the malfunctioning fountains. Irene lets her sister do the introductions as she stalks the perimeter of the fountain, staring at it as though to blink would be disastrous.

And then the lights go out.

An inhuman snarl leaves the blonde's throat, and without even thinking, without even stopping to consider the alternatives, the Ahroun is clawing her way out of her jacket and throwing it over her shoulder in preparation to shift, the matter of what Adamidis saw on the other side entirely forgotten.

[Truth's Meridian] The Philodox's lips quirk, briefly, at the greeting and she nods, her eyes trained still on the fountain. "Bonjour, I am known as Truth's Meridian, member of the Unbroken, Philodox and Silver Fang elder, current Mistress of the Challenge." There, a deluge of titles even in the midst of potential battle.

Typically Fang, darling.

And then -- the lights go out, and the Philodox sucks in a deep breath, reacting in part to the snarl of the Ahroun, but mostly against the sounds coming from the fountains. She shivers, dismayed, disgusted but resolute. With a sickening snap and grind of cloth and bone elongating and shifting, vanishing to be replaced with beautiful, snow white fur the pristine woman known as Katherine vanishes and is replaced with a large Hispo wolf with disconcertingly pale eyes.

It growls lowly; and begins to prowl toward the noises.

[For the record, activating Resist Pain, activating Ice Dance.]

[Rain of Brass Petals] She frowns, and it is a look of quiet displeasure. lips turn downward, and one shoulder drops to sling what one can assume is her purse into a more readily available position. In normal circumstances, one would assume that she was more able to put together coherent thought than she is now.

Adam is an articulate creature, and she is one that could inspire others near her more than anything else, whether that be inspiration to terror or otehrwise.

"It's dark," no shit, "entirely black on the other side. And tainted, horribly so. No glass, no water, no concrete, nothing that should be here... this statue, from the Umbra, is much more solid than it really should be."

Back to reality, and there is something forming. She continues looking through her bag, looking for clean water.

"This needs to be cleansed," a pause, and she gives Katherine a sideward glance, "Rain of Brass Petals."

All the introduction she had the presence of mind to afford.

[Kindly One] Irene snarls, sheds her jacket, and lunges forward. Alek's eyes widen, and she turns fully away from the Silver Fang, opens her mouth but not words come out. She just snaps her jaw closed and shakes her head, moving back over to Adam with a hasty, "'Scuse me," thrown over her shoulder for the Bellamonte woman's benefit.

She digs into her pocket and pulls out a bracelet of braided thread that Adam surely recognizes by now. Another is pulled from her pocket, and this one slides onto Alek's wrist. She, too, sheds her coat, lets it fall to the snow and ice laden pavement of the walkway, and rolls up her sleeves. Touching the tattoos on the insides of her wrists, Alek draws her swords, dark, curved, deadly. Though she doesn't know how much good they'll be against whatever was just vomited from the fountain. It looks like a clot expelled from a bloody nose, only on a much larger scale.

The Fury shifts up into her war form, the blades growing larger to fit within her massive handpaws.

[-viscosity-] Cleansing is, indeed, a concern. As the accumulation grows and grows, however, their primary concern will likely shift to something closer to:

kill it the fuck dead!

A low, burbling moan issues from the coalescing clots at the center of the fountain. It convulses, like overheated molasses or tar. A bubble expands, pops. Then the entire mass begins to lurch upward, taking on form and solidity as it rises. A straining, featureless head writhes free. One misshapen, molten arm; then another. Slablike, fingerless hands splat onto the concrete and push. A massive, not-quite-solid torso pulls out of the mess, dripping clots and coagulations back into the viscosity it emerged from.

A creature faces them now, moaning endlessly and piteously. It has the rough shape of half a humanoid. There is no face; no real head; only a protuberance where the head should be.

The faces on the monoliths are losing their integrity. The images, once frozen, appear now to be slowly melting. Features distort; eyelids pull grotesquely downward. Mouths sag. Chins disappear.

Lightning crackles over the monoliths. An arc of electricity leaps from one to the other, back, and then abruptly surges into the creature. Its low moaning turns into a roaring wail of -- what? Pain? Fury? It thrashes, and then heaves itself ever higher, some twenty or thirty feet high now and nearly as large around. When the shock ends, the creature seems energized, pulling itself forward with its huge, indistinct hands.

Blind as it is, it's undoubtedly aware of the Garous' locations. And it's coming at them. It does not seem to want to be friends.

Alek's swords disappear into Aquos's massive bulk without a sound. There's resistance -- significant, rubbery resistance, like dragging a blade through honey. a hundred feet away, Sinclair sinks her teeth into the northern monolith and silences it.

There's a stillness. Then a webwork of cracks appear over the surface. With a soft, rushing tinkling, like a rain of glass, the surface of the monolith chips and falls away, vanishing seconds after each fragment hits the flooded ground.

Beneath it, the proper facade of Crown Fountain stands unaffected again. An anonymous Chicagoan face smiles over the battleground.

[Rain of Brass Petals] She is an archer for a reason. And, at this moment, distance was removed. Distance, as she had learned, was a luxury she could not always afford, and she finds herself in a situation unflattering at best, terrifying at worst. Air is starting to seem as though it is no longer an option. It is starting to present itself as another luxury. Rain of Brass Petals has no room to scream, but her sisters know precisely how much of a problem this is.

She doesn't freeze in terror, and instead, she tries a different approach.

She doesn't even notice. She's snarling and snapping at the behemoth. It's a different story for her foe. [-viscosity-] Two of the five Garou fall, unconscious, concussed, one near dead.

Scarce seconds later, the deadly teeth of their remaining allies tear Aquos to shreds, reducing the tainted elemental to a dark heap, a decomposing bleb, a smear, nothing. Little by little, the taint recedes from Crown Fountain. It drains away, leaving the expanse of black granite clean and clear of snow.

A few moments later, lights in the vicinity flickers back to life one by one. The Loop brightens again.

[Rain of Brass Petals] Adamidas has priorities, and to see her sister go down was more than enough for her. She knew Irene had been in trouble. She knew that she needed to go help her, and she knew that Katherine was injured as well. What she was also aware of, however, was this: that Irene's injuries were less likely to heal on their own than Katherine's.

That, and Katherine wasn't her sister.
