thunderwyrm.

[Sheridan] It made the papers this morning: a small-scale earthquake rocked the heart of the city's south side last night, causing no structural damage but waking residents from as sound a sleep as the lot of them can hope for in a city where gunshots and bellowed arguments and sirens wreck the silence that the north side takes for granted.

There was no mention of it on the evening news; either it had not occurred again, or no one cared overmuch about the state of affairs beyond the city's downtown. People have been accused of taking bribes, awards were handed out, the owner of the Burr Oak Cemetery declared bankruptcy... too much happened today to warrant a news item dedicated to a small blip on the city's radar, and the denizens of the south side are settling in for the night.

The miscreants and criminals are out in force tonight, though; already tonight there have been reports of gunfire, and those who have come to this section of town to visit Kinfolk or patrol or simply investigate the cause of the subterranean rumbling can hear a woman wailing in the distance, screaming for her boy.

[Lukas] Earthquakes. In Chicago.

Now, if this were L.A., which is where Lukas's sister currently resides, he wouldn't give a goddamn. But this isn't L.A., this isn't San Diego, this isn't anywhere along the San Andreas Fault or any other fault Lukas knows of. A quick search on the internet shows there was a similar quake about a year and a half back; not much activity in the interim.

Lukas's curiosity is piqued. And anyway, he didn't have anything better to do on this fine Tuesday evening at the tail end of summer.

So there he is, pulling up to the curb in his previous-generation BMW M3, killing the engine and flicking the lights off. The beemer's trademark angel-eyes go dark. The machinery ticks faintly under the hood, and then the door opens. The Shadow Lord stepping out of the beemer doesn't look the way he normally does, sharply put together, dressed with an eye toward detail. He's in loose drawstring pants, a t-shirt; all of it dark. He looks like he might've just stepped out in his pjs. He looks like a jock, a college senior, something of the sort.

He looks like he's prepared for shit to go down.

The Ahroun's rage is a rolling shockwave before him, muted in this darkening moon, subsumed, but everpresent. He isn't sure where to begin. He follows his instincts, and his instincts draw him toward the distant cries.

[Joey] She's not just out for a joy ride, though driving around in Cassius is one of the greatest joys in Joey's young life. No, she's on this side of town because she went to school. And when she went to school she learned the basics of geology, about fault lines, and she learned that the only fault line in North America is out by California. Some day the San Andreas fault was going to claim a slice of California. The Rotagar knows she's not going to live to see that day. After all, she might not live to see tomorrow.

Her green and black Camaro gets parked somewhere out of the way. Joey grabs her bat bag off the passenger seat, straps it across her torso as she locks up her vehicle. It's time to sate her curiosity, find out what could cause an earthquake in the heart of the Midwest.

Dressed for combat, she's in her red softball jersey, jeans, and a pair of boots that have seen better days. She spots a familiar figure dressed in muted colors. A smile splits her freckled face, and she jogs across the street to catch up.

[Lukas] Presently active:
1 bloody bandage (1Gn spent)
1 soak talen (will be rolling)
1 damage talen (will be rolling)
Resist Pain (1WP spent)
Spirit of the Fray (constitutive)
and as soon as he's in some nice secluded alley or something, Luna's Armor (will be rolled, also 1Gn)

Also carrying:
Some arrow killers, some sense dep darts, more BBs and soak and damage talens, also some trapdoor boons.

[Salvatore Ferro] Sal hasn't been in Chicago long enough to even have picked up that unique Chicago stench; he's more or less fresh off the boat, changed into a new suit, one without bloodstains on it, headed back from a brief stop to see if a certain former associate could be found at a certain former headquarters.

Helps, to sniff the city first. These days, he ain't so settled as he was. Off, it all feels off. That's what being alone is, its off, wrong, just plain fucked.

Only, he ain't so alone, apparently. Sal's head comes up as he sees a fuck coming towards him-- no. An authoritative fuck. No, an authoritative Shadowlord fu-- uh. Garou. And, as he watches the man approach, a lord of Rank. Well, fuck.

Sal, he changes direction to go intercept some, and the other one too. Maybe they will recognize him from before, maybe not.

The Glasswalkers grins in approval at the way Lukas wears his authority, carries himself. Is. "You look like you gotta clue now, yuf," he approves with a near hum to his voice, and a grin wide enough to charm Lukas's pissiest mood.
There's a nod to the other one, the.. girl.

[Soledad Gutierrez] Soledad heard a brief mention of an earthquake playing over the radio in Giacomo's kitchen this morning, centered somewhere in Bronzeville. It made no geographical sense whatsoever, she expected them in California, occasionally in Utah or Colorado, in some places in Mexico, but certainly not in the midwest. She knew that there could be a spirit out of place, or a pack with Earthquake as its totem (wasn't there one of those running around here these days?).

Her agenda was perfectly clear. Why not investigate? Staying around the empty house simply wasn't an option, and without a pack she had no company. She had to keep busy, otherwise she would go mad.

So she hoofed it down to Bronzeville, and it took her the better part of the day. However, around the time that the sun had completely disappeared and night had taken up its rule of the city, Soledad had made it to where she wanted to be. How could she tell that she had it right? Well, about three other Garou were in the area already. On the same sidewalk, around the corner. The Uktena stopped, peering up the sidewalk to her left, and huffed a little bit.

Company.

Wordless, she rounded the brick building set up on that block's corner and walked after the group.

[Sheridan] Only one among them will recognize the tall figure coming out of the distance. Wearing four-inch black knee-high boots, a short denim skirt and a black camisole, her hair is a curly blond halo around her head and her eye makeup is dark as the sky overhead. Her footfalls clomp clomp clomp clomp throughout the quiet neighborhood, a backbeat for the distant woman's cries. It's hard to tell where it's coming from, but it isn't hard to tell that something is strangely amiss in this Midwestern city.

The ground trembles. It is closer than the woman's wailing, moving away from the anguished crying, stalking. They can feel whatever it is pass directly underneath them, a low vibration that fails to disrupt the concrete and asphalt upon which they walk.

It doesn't give them much time to prepare. Few things in this life ever come with warning or sufficient time to draw up one's safeguards and wrap one's head around the fact that one's life could cruelly and prematurely end at that particular moment. Then again, the five creatures gathered on the sidewalk should be prepared for that. How many of them have lost packmates throughout their lifetimes, or even in the last year?

All the warning they have is that rattling surge beneath their feet, and then everything goes deathly silent.

[Lukas] Garou have a knack for finding trouble, whether they seek it or not.

Lukas is seeking. Sal and Joey and Sol? As far as Lukas knows, they're not. But they fall in all the same, and now instead of one there's four, and not a one of them are packed, and it doesn't matter because

the ground heaves beneath their feet. And Wyrmbreaker drops to a crouch, one hand against the concrete, brow furrowed.

"No," he agrees, troubled, "no, it's not."

And then: "Everyone up off the ground. Now." The last word is a bark. Lukas reaches up, grabs one of those ubiquitous rattling rusty turn-of-the-century fire escapes, yanks it down -- and climbs.

As he goes, a diffuse, pale glow begins to emanate from his very skin and bones.

[Lukas] (luna's armor -- HAIL KAHSEENO!)

[Joey] “Yeah, duh. Earthquakes don't move like that, dude. Just rumble an' shake shit up.”

The ground shakes, and Joey is reminded of another hunt not so long ago. But that was a different time. The thought of dropping down into the sewer, of fighting in ankle-deep sludge and Gaia knows what does not make the girl's blood run cold. And this time, Twister is with her, bolstering her strength, making her swifter.

Taking a deep breath, she slowly exhales, calling on the Gift that will keep her body from feeling pain.

Up off the ground. Right. Joey's clambering up the fire escape after the Shadow Lord, following his lead.

[Salvatore Ferro] What was that kid a-- oh yeah. Ahroun. Trouble starts and Lukas ranks. Sal, he runs and leaps for the fire escape on the opposite side, climbs up, offers a hand to any coming behind him as well, even if it is a damned girl.

[Sheridan] The Fostern Ahroun among them recognizes what is coming. Even if he doesn't recognize precisely what he is, he realizes there is something lurking beneath the street and orders the rest of the congregation off of ground. He leads Joey and Sal up the nearby fire escape while the stranger clomps closers. When that deathly silence shrouds over the city block, she stops moving. Were she in a form other than human, her ears would be perked. As it is, her hackles are rising; her nostrils flare, and her Rage, powerfully high, swells with the impending danger.

Beyond the swelling of Rage, there are energies at work that either sputter out and die or release themselves from their bindings to assist the Garou who call on them.

The earth cries out. Street lamps are vibrating, a fire hydrant squeals as it nearly tips over, and a giant swatch of ground cracks open in a parking lot across the street from the gathered warriors as the creature pushes itself through the dirt and concrete and asphalt that had been caging it before. It sounds like the gates of Hell squealing open when the thing erupts from the road, its impossibly mouth gaping, row upon row of saliva- and dirt-caked teeth gnashing as it shoots ten, fifteen, twenty feet into the air, its length growing ever-longer before their eyes. The stench of rotting flesh and old blood fills the already soupy air, and its breath blows in their faces as it crests and falls back toward the earth.

It's almost as if it's bowing to them.

[INIIIIITS!]

[Soledad Gutierrez] Everyone goes for the fire escape because Lukas the Mighty barks at them to do so. Soledad's balance wavered some when the ground tugged and pulled and rolled beneath her feet, and her hand grasped hold of a lamp post to make sure that she didn't tip over. Dark amber eyes cut to the four climbing onto the fire escape, and she shook her head a little. Clustering together like that made them an easy target.

She, instead, grasped the light pole with both long-fingered hands and pulled herself up that with strong, easy pulls, carrying her own weight with ease like the star athlete in school will climb the rope. Some ten feet off the ground, near the top where she can feel the heat and really hear the electric drone of the lights, where she can swear that she feels the spiritual presence of the elementals trapped there on the Other Side, she wrapped her legs around the pole to secure herself.

Let come what may, she wasn't going to be part of a dogpile when the thing focused its attack on the group.

[Lukas] There's scarcely any time to think. A monstrosity vomits out of the earth, shattering concrete, shaking buildings. It arcs up into the sky, mindbendingly enormous, and Wyrmbreaker looks up at it and thinks

Jsi kurva srandu.

And then it's on. "Fur gnarl, flanking attacks!" he snarls -- the battle is one huge confusion, and he misses his packmates suddenly, bitingly, because with them he wouldn't have to shout, wouldn't have to waste precious breath and thought and effort on trying to make himself clear, "Stay above it, don't let it pin you against the ground!"

And then he's leaping for its back. Digging his claws in, leaving them behind like beestings. Snarling and biting at it, tearing at its armor, pulling chunks of grey chitinous exoskeleton away to reveal the tender, putrid flesh beneath. His mouth is full of foulness; it burns his throat as he snarls for them to:

Fur gnarl, [goddammit!]
and
Flank it!

It's chaos. Blood and fur and ichor flies. Wyrmbreaker is clinging to the thing's back, and the newcomer's with Joey on the fire escape behind him, and Salvatore's on the ground and at its flank and Soledad is --

Soledad is up a light post, clawing for what she thinks might be its eyes.

"Muerte Fria," this is not a shout; this is a fucking roar, "tear its [fucking] armor away, NOW. Ferrowolf, get in beside her, strike where its armor is weak. Rest of you stay with me. Hit from from both sides."

[Sheridan] Considering the fact that they didn't see this coming, considering the fact that none of them are bound together under a common totem, considering the fact that this thing is large enough to eclipse several of the tenement houses in the neighborhood... considering the fact that one misstep or miscalculation could have resulted in one of them being gulped down a cavernous gullet and never heard from again, this battle is over in a matter of minutes.

Straight out of the gate, Wyrmbreaker is able to slow the thing's movements with a pair of embedded claws that must feel like mere splinters to this great beast. He shouts a handful of orders, and the stranger immediately shreds a bare patch in the thing's hide for the rest of them to dig into. Muerte Fría is the only one left in her original position when the first wave is over, and while the city isn't aware of what's hit it, neither are its denizens able to wrap their minds around what they are seeing when they look out the window.

To them, it is an earthquake. Or the reckoning. Hell has sprouted up on their street and the best thing to do is hug their children or hide in their bedrooms until the shaking passes.

Wyrmbreaker and the stranger put the biggest dents in the creature, with Muerte Fría and Ferrowolf helping to pick away at it, though it hardly seems to be feeling any of the claws or teeth that go into it until Laughs in the Face of Death lurches over the fire escape and bites a tremendous chunk from its hide. An ear-splitting roar leaves the very pit of it; windows rattle, babies scream, yet the Garou are undaunted. Face of Death bites it again, and it begins to waver.

It is oozing from three points of contact, a viscous, rust-colored, foul-smelling substance leaving the wounds on its side and back. Wyrmbreaker and the stranger tear into it again, the former exposing its spine and the latter tearing into its innards; foul, steaming intestines fall out of the thing's side and splatter onto the concrete with the stranger's last bite, but it is Ferrowolf who digs his bite into that gaping hole left by the stranger and severs what has to be a major blood vessel. Blood pours onto the street, and the thing looses a keening cry before shaking off its assailants and upending itself, disappearing back into the hole from whence it came.

A final, miserable wail dies in the hole, and takes the beast with it.

[Salvatore Ferro] Sal slips back to homid as soon as its feasible to do so. He doesn't have much to say, apart from a brief introduction, whatever assistance is needed for cleaning shit up, and a word or ten of thanks...
The rest will all go into the Record.
Before he leaves, he offers each a bit of minty gum. "Wyrmguts gotta nasty taste. See ya.."

[Lukas] Afterward, the street is drenched in a sort of blasted, shellshocked silence.

Wyrmbreaker is on all fours, fur bristling, soaked in the viscous, foul fluids that erupted from the creature every fucking time he bit down. He plants his feet and shakes himself off, furiously, and his tongue licks in and out as though to rid itself of some terrible taste.

"Let's clean the entrails up. I'll call the kin to fill in the hole and cover the story up." A pause, and then he looks directly at the stranger. "You should follow us to the Caern. You helped turn the tide here today, and the Guardians should know you were defending the Caern before you were even properly a part of it."

[Sheridan] In her war form, the stranger is a sinewy, scrappy behemoth; it is only after she has spat out a mouthful of blood and hide that she shrinks back down into her human form, which is 6'2" in her boots and leanly yet powerfully built. She is soaked in fetid blood, has it up her bare arms and on her jaw; when her unbeknownst peer offers her a stick of gum she simply quirks an eyebrow at him and gives a terse shake of her head.

He who had been giving orders throughout the battle speaks up next, offers to get the Kinfolk in here and the mess cleaned up, and the stranger squares up her shoulders and looks him in the eye. This isn't the carriage of a typical street urchin, a mutt who's used to being kicked. She has the bearing of one who has proven herself. Twice, now, she's fought alongside Muerte Fría, and has yet to introduce herself to the Sept.

There is an old wound on the right side of her neck, the scabs visible through all the 'fresh' blood.

"I think I will," she says, her accent a slow drawl without distinct placement on the US map. Without further color commentary or questions about where they're going, the stranger gives a decisive nod of her head, and moves to pick up the guts she'd strewn on the broken roadway.

[Joey] Joey does what she can to make her way down to street level. Clean up the entrails, Wyrmbreaker said, and that's what the Rotagar sets about doing. She lifts her massive head, the white patches of her muzzle wet with rust-colored liquid, and looks around the surroundings. The homes are quiet, the curtains drawn against the hellish fight that just took place on the street. Joey shakes herself out, and shifts into her war form. Others had already done the same, but the heavier, stronger body and, hell, having opposable thumbs would help move the body parts around. In this form it's easy to see the four raking claw marks across her abdomen.

She moves to help the stranger, moving things as directed by her or Wyrmbreaker.

[Lukas] Lukas. The one who's been giving orders throughout. And the one that some, if not all of them, look to to continue giving orders for the cleanup. If this newfound position of authority surprises him, or startles him --

-- no; that's not even worth exploring. There isn't a shred of discomfort to him. The Ahroun is calm, deliberate, polite, confident. It's entirely clear that Wyrmbreaker inhabits the role that was given to him not on the day he passed his Fostern challenge, really, but from the day he was recognized as an Ahroun of the Nation. From the day he Changed. From the day that Theurge looked into his spirit and said, yes. this one bears the Wolf.

From the day he was born.

So; cleanup commences. A dirty business of cutting chunks of chitin and gelatinous flesh into manageable pieces; of winding sticky, slick entrails up; of shoving them into garbage bags produced from the trunk of Lukas's BMW. Some of the mess disappears astonishingly, magically, eaten away before their very eyes by invisible phantasms across the Gauntlet. Most of it ends up shoved into the trunk of the Shadow Lord's car, hauled away for disposal.

When the worst of it is gone, the Garou retire. Those with their own means of transportation leave; those without are offered a spot in Lukas's car, bound for the Caern. There's a phone call to cleanup-kin to be made. There's a new Garou to present to the Guardians. There's a new trophy to be nailed up.

One exception, though. When Soledad tries to slip off, Lukas calls her back.

"Muerte Fria." His tone is level; inscrutable. "Ride with me. We should talk."

It's not the first time Soledad has ridden in Lukas's car to talk.
